Court OKs immunity for telecoms in wiretap case (AP)

SAN FRANCISCO ? A federal appeals court has ruled as constitutional a law giving telecommunications companies legal immunity for helping the government with its email and telephone eavesdropping program.

Thursday's unanimous ruling by a three-judge panel of the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals affirmed a lower court decision regarding the 2008 law.

The appeal concerned a case that consolidated 33 different lawsuits filed against various telecom companies, including AT&T, Sprint Nextel, Verizon Communications Inc. and BellSouth Corp. on behalf of these companies' customers.

The court noted comments made by the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence regarding the legal immunity's role in helping the government gather intelligence.

"It emphasized that electronic intelligence gathering depends in great part on cooperation from private companies ... and that if litigation were allowed to proceed against persons allegedly assisting in such activities, `the private sector might be unwilling to cooperate with lawful government requests in the future,'" Judge M. Margaret McKeown said.

The plaintiffs, represented by lawyers including the San Francisco-based Electronic Frontier Foundation and the American Civil Liberties Union, accuse the companies of violating the law and the privacy of its customers through collaboration with National Security Agency on intelligence gathering.

The case stemmed from new surveillance rules passed by Congress in 2008 that included protection from legal liability for telecommunications companies that allegedly helped the U.S. spy on Americans without warrants.

"I'm very disappointed. I think the court reaches to try to put lipstick on a pig here," said Cindy Cohn, legal director of the Electronic Frontier Foundation, who argued the case before the panel. "I think what Congress did was an abdication of its duty to protect people from illegal surveillance."

Thursday did not bring all bad news for plaintiffs challenging the government's surveillance efforts.

In a separate opinion on Thursday, a three-judge panel of the court revived two other lawsuits that seek redress for telecom customers whose information may have been compromised by the warrantless surveillance program.

Two groups of telecom customers sued the NSA for violating their privacy by collecting Internet data from AT&T and other major telecom companies in the surveillance program authorized by President George W. Bush.

Government lawyers have moved to stop such cases, arguing that defending the program in court would jeopardize national security and expose state secrets.

The suits will be sent back to U.S. District Court in San Francisco.

Emails seeking comment from AT&T and the U.S. Department of Justice weren't immediately returned.

(AP) ? Republican presidential hopeful Jon Huntsman on Friday urged New Hampshire voters to stand up to the status quo and reject Mitt Romney, while a group of his supporters prepared a new television ad calling Romney a chameleon willing to do anything to get elected.

The $300,000 ad campaign is expected to begin running across New Hampshire this weekend, according to an adviser for the organization known as Our Destiny PAC. The adviser was not authorized to comment publicly.

"Two serious candidates remain," a voice says in the ad, which flashes images of Huntsman, the former Utah governor, and Romney, the former Massachusetts governor and front-runner in New Hampshire. "One willing to say anything, be anything. One who can actually do the job."

It continues: "One state can stop the chameleon. Vote Jon Huntsman."

Huntsman, who served as ambassador to China in the Obama administration, has not been anywhere near that pointed in his criticism of Romney. Speaking to employees at a Portsmouth software company Friday, he said Romney would be unlikely to change the "trust deficit" in Washington given that Romney has "half of Congress supporting him."

"Who's going to want to change anything when you've got the status quo supporting you?" Huntsman said. "You can have a candidate who's going to fight for change who is not going to be in the hip pocket of special interest groups, or you're going to have the status quo choice."

Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich also wouldn't do anything to restore trust in Washington, Huntsman said.

"Speaker Gingrich is not the kind of person who is going to be able to deal effectively with the trust issue because you can't deal effectively with the trust issue if you are a fixture of Washington, D.C., and have been for 40 years."

Huntsman, who is skipping Tuesday's Iowa caucuses, is betting his candidacy on a strong finish in New Hampshire's Jan. 10 Republican primary, which is open to independents as well as registered Republicans.

Huntsman entered the presidential contest with great expectations earlier in the year. But national polling suggests he's still largely unknown to many Republican voters. He's also struggled to raise enough money to pay for his own television advertising campaigns. On Wednesday, he told The Associated Press he's likely to leave the race unless he finishes in the top three in New Hampshire.

Pam Hicks, one of the software company workers, said she was 100 percent adamant before meeting Huntsman that she would not vote for him. After the event, Hicks said she was reconsidering although she doesn't like his anti-abortion views or his opposition to gay marriage, which is legal in New Hampshire.

"We believe nobody has the right to tell us how to live our lives," she said.

Still, Hicks said she planned to do more research on Huntsman.

"He needs a more serious look," she said.

Our Destiny PAC has now spent roughly $1.9 million on New Hampshire advertising to help Huntsman. That's more than any other outside group or other campaign has spent in the state, according to numbers obtained by The Associated Press.

Baby sitter murder charge in Indiana girl's death (AP)

FORT WAYNE, Ind. ? A trusted family friend who confessed to police that he bludgeoned to death a 9-year-old Indiana girl in his care then dismembered her just days before Christmas was formally charged Friday in the killing.

Michael Plumadore, 39, was charged in Fort Wayne with murder, abuse of a corpse and removing a dead body from the scene in the Dec. 22 death of Aliahna Maroney-Lemmon.

Allen County prosecutor's office chief investigator Danielle Edenfield said the charges will be read to Plumadore in jail, where he was being held without bond. An initial court hearing on the formal charges is scheduled for Wednesday.

Edenfield said she couldn't comment on a possible motive before the case went to trial.

Plumadore had been looking after Aliahna and her two younger sisters because their mother was sick. He had looked after Aliahna's dying grandfather and her family had considered him a trusted friend and neighbor.

According to court documents, Plumadore told police he hit the girl repeatedly in the head with a brick on the steps of the trailer where he had lived with her grandfather. He then put the girl's body inside trash bags and stuffed it inside a freezer in the trailer.

Plumadore told authorities that he later used a hack saw to dismember her body.

She was reported missing Dec. 23, and on Saturday, more than 100 emergency workers searched the rundown trailer park in the north of Fort Wayne where Plumadore and Aliahna's family lived.

Police questioned Plumadore several times over the weekend and arrested him on Monday, at which point he told police that he had hidden Aliahna's head, feet and hands at the trailer and discarded her other remains at a nearby business. Police obtained a warrant to search the trailer and found the body parts.

Allen County Coroner E. Jon Brandenberger has said he won't be able to determine the cause of death until further tests are completed, including microscopic findings and toxicology results.

The prosecutor's office said the investigation is continuing.

Plumadore had earlier faced a preliminary charge of murder, and the Allen County Prosecutor's Office said in a news release that the charges filed Friday do not "preclude the filing of additional charges."

The standard prison sentence for a murder conviction in Indiana is 45 years to 65 years. The other charges each carry maximum sentences of three years in prison.

Allen County Chief Deputy Prosecutor Mike McAlexander told The News-Sentinel Friday that his office had not dismissed the possibility of seeking the death penalty against Plumadore.

Plumadore has a criminal record in Florida and North Carolina that includes convictions for trespassing and assault, and an Indiana conviction for forgery.

The Daily Iowegian reported Friday that Plumadore was accused in November 2010 of making inappropriate phone calls and sending text messages to a 13-year-old girl while he was living with that girl's father in Moravia, Iowa.

Court records obtained by the newspaper state that Plumadore was allegedly "stalking her, sending her explicit sexual text messages and photographs."

Plumadore faced a petition for relief of domestic abuse in that alleged case, but an Iowa judge later dismissed the petition because it didn't meet the relationship requirement for a protective order, the Daily Iowegian reported.

The newspaper also reported that while she was living in Iowa with her mother, Aliahna was the victim of a January 2010 sexual assault in which a 19-year-old man fondled her. That man later pleaded guilty to a charge of indecent contact with a child.

2007 Ford F-150

Full-size pickups are a little like a solid relationship: comfortable, forgiving, strong, reliable and loyal.

Over the years trucks have become more luxurious, better equipped and cushier. Though they are still built to be mechanical workhorses, they often serve double duty as daily drivers.

And automakers recognize the potential: full-size pickups come in dozens of combinations of cabs, drivetrains, beds and suspensions.

If you're planning to travel the snow-filled trail to the cottage this winter or rutted, mud-slicked roads when the frost thaws, and perhaps take along an all-terrain vehicle or snowmobile, here are the biggest, most capable trucks for the job.

Chevrolet Silverado/

GMC Sierra

Though General Motors admits these two trucks, redesigned for 2007, share most components (sheet metal separates the fraternal twins), the Chevy/GMC faceoff exists because loyal buyers think otherwise.

It's not uncommon to hear the "My Silverado is better than your Sierra" debate, especially in small towns, the heartland for pickups.

Built on an all-new platform, the Silverado/Sierra's ride is smooth, and handling is tight. The cabin is quiet and there's a choice of two interiors: pure pickup (with larger controls and door handles easier to use with gloves) and luxury (with an upscale, SUV-like design, leather, heated seats and Bose speakers).

For 2008, the trucks get upgraded with a power-adjustable driver's portion of the regular cab's front bench and brighter instrument needles in the gauge cluster. Though there's still no driver's side grab handle for easier entry.

Three cab styles are available: regular, extended and crew; three cargo boxes: short (5.8-foot), standard (6.6-foot) and long (8-foot); three trims (Silverado/Sierra): base WT or W/E, LT/SLE and LTZ/SLT; and two-wheel drive or four-wheel drive.

Five suspension systems are offered, up to eight different engines (including a 5.3 L V8 with fuel-saving Displacement on Demand) and up to three transmissions (two for the Silverado).

Best for: Those in the fishing industry. The rugged Silverado and Sierra are like magnets in fishing villages from the inner harbours on Vancouver Island to Trinity Bay, Nfld. It likely has a lot to do with low flatbed load-in height, ideal for stacking lobster traps.

Numbers that matter:

Towing capacity: 3,629 to 4,763 kg

Payload: 709 to 980 kg

Starting price: $23,520

Dodge Ram

To say the Ram is big is an understatement. The truck is massive ? so large Dodge claims it's available with the largest cargo bed, interior cargo volume, cargo volume behind the rear seat, flat-floor load area, second-row legroom, rear door opening and open angle.

The irony, however, is that while it's without a doubt big to park, it's easy to manoeuvre into a spot, even if it's a tight fit. And like all of the big pickups, side running boards are a necessity rather an accessory.

Earlier this year, Dodge upgraded the Ram's optional (and pricey, $9,045) Cummins inline-six turbodiesel from 5.9 L to a new, smoother and quieter 6.7 L version with 350 hp and 650 lb.-ft. of torque. The rig also moved up to a more competitive six-speed automatic transmission.

Three Ram models are available: 1500, 2500 and 3500 (the new Cummins is standard). A 5.7 L Hemi V8 with 345 hp and 375 lb.-ft. of torque is standard on the 1500 and 2500 trucks. Four transmissions are on offer, as well as several trims (ST, SLT, TRX4, Sport and Laramie).

Choose between two-wheel drive and four-wheel drive. Two box sizes are available: 6.4-foot or 8-foot.

Best for: Construction. Whether you're the foreperson of a multi-million-dollar site or a regular at the Home Depot, the Ram is a workhorse that lives up to the task of getting down and dirty (check out the ground clearance) or weighed down with material.

Numbers that matter:

Towing capacity: 1,338 to 7,438 kg

Payload: 567 to 2,327 kg

Starting price: $21,995

Ford F-Series

Big trucks are not typically known for having a plush ride, but that was one of Ford's goals when it redesigned its F-Series lineup for the 2007 model year.

Ride and handling have improved by attaching the suspension's new rear leaf springs more forward on the frame. And, as an added benefit, the rear suspension was specifically designed to keep the rear end lower to give the vehicle more balance and control when towing taller gooseneck and fifth-wheel trailers.

Ford says its huge trucks, like those in the F-450 category (with a 7,257 to 11,113 kg towing capacity), were once only used as hardcore working haulers. The market, however, is crossing over to appeal to customers who pull large recreational equipment such as 12-metre-long boats or Airstreams.

Behind that bold grille is an optional 6.4 L Power Stroke turbodiesel that delivers 350 hp and 650 lb.-ft. of torque starting at 2000 rpm. The engine complies with new North American diesel regulations, and helps to reduce soot by up to 97 per cent while posting emissions numbers on par with those from gasoline engines, its maker says.

There's a choice of two other gas-powered engines, four models (XL, XLT, FX4 and Lariat), three body types (regular, SuperCab, Crew Cab) and two drivelines (4x2 or 4x4).

Ford has also pulled a few convenient gizmos out of the hat: There's an available ($495) rear backup camera that's built into the rear-view mirror.

An optional tailgate step makes it easier to climb into the flatbed. At the touch of a button, new PowerScope trailer-tow side mirrors telescope in or out and fold.

Best for: Farming. Running through the fields loaded down with hay bales, towing equipment and serving double duty as a family hauler, the F-Series is ideal for the simple life.

Numbers that matter:

Towing capacity: 2,313 to 11,113 kg

Payload: 653 to 2,775 kg

Starting price: $22,199

Nissan Titan

The newest truck to join the full-size pickup market (it debuted for 2004), the Titan gets a minor facelift for 2008 with a revised front end, wheel lip mouldings and new 18- and 20-inch wheel designs. Inside, the truck sports new seats and a refined instrument cluster.

For a newcomer to the truck game, the Titan has a good choice of permutations: there are four models (XE, SE, PRO-4X and LE); two cab styles: King and Crew; standard or long wheelbase; four bed lengths (5.6-foot or 7-foot for Crew, 6.6-foot or 8-foot for King), and 4x2 and 4x4 drive configurations.

A 5.6 L V8 with 317 hp and 385 lb.-ft. of torque and a five-speed automatic transmission are standar

For one of the smallest engines in the group, the Titan feels adequately powered, and, when it's not weighed down, acceleration is swift.

But that's where the fun ends. Titan is the bulkiest to drive of all the full-size trucks.

It's harder to see over the hood compared to rivals, it's chunky to park in a Canadian Tire-sized spot and its turning radius feels wider than the rest.

Inside, Titan seems more SUV in its design than work truck, though there are the requisite nooks and crannies, bins and boxes to hold all the stuff that accumulates in an office on wheels. The centre console can even hold a 1 L water bottle, a convenient feature.

Best for: Pilots. Like an airplane, this Nissan is awkward to manoeuvre on the ground. Factor in more space than you need to fit in a parking spot or traffic, and you'll master the physics of driving a Titan. But, like a plane, once it gets moving, it runs pretty quickly.

Numbers that matter:

Towing capacity: 4,218 to 4,309 kg

Payload: 867 to 911 kg

Starting price: $33,498

Toyota Tundra

While Nissan might be happy going after alternative full-size truck buyers, Toyota is aiming for the jugulars of the Detroit Three.

You could say the Tundra is the persistent pickup. When it was launched in 2000, it was criticized for being too small and too car-like in its abilities. And it was built by a Japanese automaker, while the traditional contenders hailed from the U.S.

But the new-generation Tundra, rolled out earlier in 2007, took the crown at this year's Truck King Challenge, a pickup competition organized by freelance auto writer Howard J. Elmer.

And though the new truck is Japanese by brand, it's striving to be American: It's designed in California, gets its technical wherewithal from engineers in Ann Arbor, Mich., and comes to life at a plant in the heart of truck country, San Antonio, Tex.

Like the competition, the Tundra is highly customizable. There are said to be 32 ways to mix engines (4.7 L or 5.7 L V8s), transmissions (five- or all-new six-speed), cab size (regular, double and CrewMax), bed lengths (5.5-foot, 6.5-foot and 8.1-foot), 4x2 or 4x4 drivelines, trim levels and option packages.

Tundra's love-it-or-loathe-it styling features bold and edgy lines and takes some getting used to. The cabin design is clean and modern, with an abundance of storage solutions (some are even hidden in the doors).

Best for: The city-dwelling young professional who regularly escapes to the cottage, with an ATV, boat and/or dirt bike. When it's time to move around those goodies, the Tundra is up to the task.

Numbers that matter:

Towing capacity: 3,535 to 4,895 kg

Payload: 565 to 860 kg

Starting price: $23,475

Plane makes emergency landing at Vt. airport

A plane has made an emergency landing at Burlington International Airport shortly after takeoff after an engine failed and there was a report of smoke in the cargo hold.

Airport operations specialist Patrick Sharrow says the United Airlines CRJ700 plane, which can carry up to 70 people, landed safely at 6:28 a.m. EST. Wednesday after being in the air for about 10 minutes. No one was reported injured.

Airport Director of Operations Richard Varney said he believed the plane was bound for Chicago.

Smart Guide to 2012: Higgs hunt is all about catching Zs

Read more: "Smart Guide 2012: 10 ideas you'll want to understand"

Imagine trying to spot the tracks of a zebra after a herd of horses has passed by. That gives you an idea of the challenges the Higgs boson hunters face in 2012.

It may seem as if the search is almost over. On 13 December, two teams at the Large Hadron Collider at CERN, near Geneva in Switzerland, reported hints of the Higgs boson, the elusive particle thought to give all others mass. A deluge of data due from the LHC next year should be able to confirm these signals - or rule out the particle altogether.

But accumulating data is just the start of the painstaking process of particle discovery. The Higgs is not detected directly, but via the things it decays into, such as pairs of photons or particles called Z bosons. Other, less exotic, particles such as quarks can also generate these decay products. This background can swamp the Higgs signal. "The background becomes the Achilles heel of the search," says LHC team member Bruce Mellado of the University of Wisconsin in Madison.

The nature of the most recent signal, which suggests a lightweight Higgs, only makes the search harder. Unlike a heavy Higgs, a light Higgs rarely decays into Z bosons, and its more common decay products are even more easily lost in the background.

To claim a Higgs discovery, physicists need to extract from this mess the gold standard signal - one with a statistical significance of 5 sigma, meaning the chance of producing it from background events alone is less than one in a million.

Munchak: No interest in being Penn State head coach

Photo: N/A, License: N/A, Created: 2011:10:09 13:39:55

ASSOCIATED PRESS FILE Mike Munchak is in his first year as head coach of the NFL's Tennessee Titans.

Penn State's next head coach evidently won't be from Scranton.

It won't even be the man reported by some media outlets to be the search committee's top target.

Mike Munchak says he's happy where he is, thank you very much.

In his strongest comments to date on the speculation that his hiring as Penn State's next head coach might be imminent, the Tennessee Titans head coach and Scranton native said Wednesday he has "no interest" in succeeding Joe Paterno as the Nittany Lions' head coach next season.

"I love my alma mater, but I have no interest in being the head coach at Penn State," Munchak told The Tennessean. "I never want to leave Tennessee. I have a great deal of respect for Penn State, and I hope they find a great coach there. But I am happy where I'm at."

Despite rampant speculation that Munchak's loyalty to Penn State might lead him back to Happy Valley to contribute in the aftermath of the Jerry Sandusky scandal that led to the firings of Paterno and university president Graham Spanier, as well as perjury charges against athletic director Tim Curley, it appears to be loyalty that will keep him away. Munchak has been part of the Titans organization since 1982, when owner Bud Adams and the then-Houston Oilers drafted him in the first round after a stellar career as a guard with the Nittany Lions.

The Scranton Central graduate is one of the organization's greatest icons. In 2001, he was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame, and after spending more than a decade as the Titans' offensive line coach, he achieved his dream of becoming an NFL head coach in February when Adams hired him to replace longtime Titans coach Jeff Fisher.

Munchak is one of just five Penn State players to be inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame, and he's the only former Penn State player ever to be named a head coach in the NFL.

In his first season, the Titans are 8-7 and still alive in the race for the second wildcard berth in the AFC heading into the final weekend of the regular season.

For his part, Munchak - who has a three-year contract with the Titans - said he has not talked to anybody at Penn State about the opening or the coaching search, in spite of reports that he might indeed have been at the top of the wish list for acting athletic director Dave Joyner and the search committee. Committee members have been tight-lipped in regards to the coaching search over the last several weeks, and few coaches have publicly acknowledged their interest in the job, never mind interviewing for it.

Interim coach Tom Bradley has interviewed, as have quarterbacks coach Jay Paterno and co-defensive coordinator Larry Johnson. A pair of Green Bay Packers assistants - quarterbacks coach Tom Clements and former Penn State and Pittsburgh Steelers safety Darren Perry - have said they would like to be considered.

Initially, Joyner said he hoped the coaching search would be completed before the bowl game, but in a statement released last week, he preached patience, saying a deliberate search was necessary to ensure the right coach would be hired. According to sources, it appears the earliest the university would introduce a new coach is the first week of January.

It appears that whoever that coach is won't be the man considered by so many to be the front-runner.

"It is not like I'm saying I want nothing to do with Penn State," Munchak told The Tennessean. "I am interested in what happens there, and I don't want to distance myself from Penn State.

"My point is, I have no interest in being the head coach there."

Verizon experiencing nationwide data outage? (update: Verizon confirms)

That phone on Big Red having problems with data? Apparently you're not alone, as the carrier appears to be having issues again judging by the metric ton of emails we've gotten from you experiencing LTE, and in some cases CDMA, blackouts across the country. Our Galaxy Nexus in New York is chugging along with 1xRTT while a Thunderbolt in Washington DC is doing just fine with CDMA. We've just pinged Verizon and will update if we hear back.

Update: Verizon wrote in with the following statement:

We are investigating reports of some customers experiencing trouble accessing the 4GLTE network. The network itself continues to operate and all customers continue to be able to make calls, send text messages and utilize data services. 3G devices are operating normally.

Christmas Church Attacks by Islam's Boko Haram in Nigeria (Time.com)

On the blood-splattered front walls of the blasted church, using wood burned into charcoal from the flames of the explosion, somebody scrawled two messages: "Revolution now" and "No more peace in the country." In the aftermath of the attack by Islamist militants against a Christian sanctuary in Abuja and four other churches in Nigeria, those are the symptoms of a sectarian backlash that Nigerian authorities are most alarmed about.

At least 32 people were killed as they poured out of the packed Christmas-morning Mass in St. Theresa Catholic Church near Abuja, the capital, Interior Minister Abba Moro told TIME. Four other bombs elsewhere in the country took at least three lives. Boko Haram, a group whose aim is to impose a strict interpretation of Islamic Shari'a on Africa's most populous country, took credit for the attacks. One-third of Nigerian states already live under Shari'a. (See TIME's photo-essay "Bombing in Nigeria.")

Authorities are now battling to keep a lid on the bubbling threat of a sectarian civil conflict that would pitch one half of Nigeria's population of 155 million against the other. "The fact that Christian facilities were bombed was intended primarily to provoke Christians into attacking Muslims," Moro told TIME. "We have appealed to our Christian brothers for them not to do so." But two days after the bombing, the area around St. Theresa remained tense as angry young men loitered just beyond military cars patrolling the area. "If the government cannot protect us, we will take revenge by ourselves," said Josiah Agbo, 18, whose mother was killed in the blast. He left only after a priest from St. Theresa took to the streets urging Christians not to attack Muslims. In a country where religious leaders wield enormous power, Muslim counterparts in the powerful Sokoto and Kano caliphates -- the country's historic Islamic communities -- denounced the bombings.

"The people lying in hospitals after the Christmas bombs were ... Muslim and Christian," Moro said. "Boko Haram aren't aliens from another planet. People know who they are. We want to draw members of the public into sharing that information to prevent future attacks." He said two arrests in connection with the Christmas bombings were made because of just such collaboration.

But there have been almost 500 deaths in near daily bomb blasts and shoot-outs in the predominantly Muslim northeast in 2011 alone. And Boko Haram (a name that means "non-Islamic education is sacrilege" in the northern Hausa language) at times seems perilously close to plunging the country into chaos. "The Islamic militants want Nigeria to be an Islamic republic like Iran, but we may end up becoming a Sudan or Somalia if the violence continues at this pace and scale," says activist Shehu Sani, who heads the Civil Rights Congress of Nigeria and led attempts to mediate a cease-fire with the group. "It all depends on the ability of the leadership to handle the crisis."

A diplomat who requested anonymity told TIME that Boko Haram has splintered into different factions that are prepared to use varying degrees of force. A December report by the U.S. Congress said Boko Haram has morphed from homegrown criminals into worldly terrorists with the capability of forging international links. Boko Haram spokespeople have claimed that its members have traveled as far east as Somalia, where al-Shabab militants have shared financing and techniques. In December, a serving Senator from Boko Haram's home of Borno State was charged with financing the organization. He denied the charges and has been released on bail. (See "Hell on Christmas Day: Nigeria's Deadly Bombings.")

Countries such as the U.S., France and the U.K. are stepping up assistance to Nigeria in areas like explosives forensics and intelligence gathering, a Nigerian military spokesperson says. "How does one keep one step ahead of not just one but all these groups? That is what we in Nigeria, just like in developed nations, need to work out," the spokesperson adds.

"Some people see Boko Haram as the right irritant to sting the government into action over poverty and corruption," says Sani, the activist. For some, however, the response from Nigeria's ruling elite has often seemed lackluster. "Still not a single [senior] government has visited," Agbo said at St. Theresa. "It's always the same. They are too busy with themselves to bother with us." Some of the Boko Haram mayhem can be traced back to the government. Its attempts to crush the group in 2009 led to the killing of Boko Haram's then leader and 900 other deaths in sectarian riots. The move may have further radicalized the organization, pushing its leadership underground and into neighboring countries. Meanwhile, the Muslim elite is grumbling over the ascendancy of President Goodluck Jonathan -- a southern Christian. His succession to the office violated an unwritten agreement that the highest office should rotate between north and south every two terms. A former university lecturer, Jonathan was dubbed the Accidental President by the local press after he succeeded Umaru Yar'Adua, a Muslim, who died in 2010 midway through his first term. The following year, Jonathan ran successfully for office.

Take My Advice

In June, a woman wrote about the impending funeral of her beloved great-aunt. She said her aunt had always been a vibrant person and wanted to put the ?fun? in funeral when her time came: party hats, confetti, a bonfire. The niece wanted to carry out these wishes, but the other older relatives were threatening to boycott the funeral. I suggested that it wasn?t fair for someone to dictate from beyond the grave that people who are grief-stricken party and celebrate, and that a more traditional funeral, followed by an Irish-wake-style get-together, would work better. I heard back from the niece, who said she read both her letter and my response to her dying aunt. The aunt liked my advice and told her niece a traditional funeral would be fine, and that she?d like if everyone got together for a party the following day. The aunt died three days after the letter was published. The niece wrote: ?We had a rather subdued funeral, but the next day we had a wonderful barbecue. Pictures were pulled out of attics and everyone shared memories. We cried, we laughed, but mostly, we celebrated Auntie?s life!?

Exclusive: Groupon Acquires Stealth Silicon Valley Startup Campfire Labs

grouponGroupon has continued its (talent) acquisition spree with the recent purchase of a hot Silicon Valley startup before they even launched - and with extremely little fanfare. We've learned that Campfire Labs, which was founded by ex-Googler Sakina Arsiwala (previously Head of International at YouTube) and her husband, social search technology expert Naveen Koorakula (previously at search companies like Inktomi, Yahoo and Picch), was quietly bought by Groupon.

This week: those unavoidable Ryanair charges and the best currency to take on holiday to Mexico ??

?????Monday 26th December, 2011??Source: The Independent ??
Q. I am fully aware of the various fees Ryanair charges and how to avoid them, but I have just discovered it now charges for online check-in at 6 per person.
This is scandalous, since there is no other way to check-in without incurring a charge.
Surely someone should be taking it to task for this? Richard Hunt

Cruise's 'Mission' accomplishes box-office win (AP)

LOS ANGELES ? Hollywood has picked up a little Christmas bonus.

Studios generally underestimated the size of their movie audiences over the weekend, and they're now revising the holiday revenues upward.

Leading the way is Tom Cruise's "Mission: Impossible ? Ghost Protocol," which pulled in $29.5 million for the weekend. That Monday figure is $3 million more than distributor Paramount estimated a day earlier.

For the four-day period Friday to Monday, Paramount estimates "Ghost Protocol" will have taken in $46.2 million to raise its domestic total to $78.6 million. That's on top of $140 million the film has taken in overseas, giving it a worldwide haul of $218.6 million.

Studios Monday also reported stronger results than they did a day earlier for Robert Downey Jr.'s "Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows," which was No. 2 at $20.3 million for the three-day weekend and $31.8 million for the four-day period; Steven Spielberg's "The Adventures of Tintin" at No. 5 with $9.7 million over three days and $16.1 million for four days; and Matt Damon's "We Bought a Zoo" at No. 6 with $9.5 million over three days and $15.6 million for four days.

In a tight race for the No. 4 spot were David Fincher's "The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo" and the family sequel "Alvin and the Chipmunks: Chipwrecked."

"Dragon Tattoo" did $12.8 million over three days and $19.4 million for four days. "Chipwrecked" took in $12.7 million over three days and $20 million for four days.

A few films debuted on Christmas Day, among them Spielberg's World War I epic "War Horse," which took in $7.5 million Sunday. Through Monday, its estimated two-day total is $15 million.

Also debuting was Emile Hirsch's action thriller "The Darkest Hour," which earned $3 million Sunday and had a two-day total of $5.5 million through Monday.

Opening solidly in just six theaters was Tom Hanks and Sandra Bullock's Sept. 11 drama "Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close," which took in $71,000 Sunday and $136,000 through Monday. The film expands to nationwide release in January.

Despite the upward revision on some movies' revenues, the Christmas weekend continued a box-office slide that has persisted since Thanksgiving. Overall revenues from Friday to Monday totaled $184 million, down 10 percent from Christmas weekend last year, according to box-office tracker Hollywood.com.

China begins trial operations of home grown Beidou GPS system

The Russians have GLONASS, and the EU will eventually have Galileo, so China's probably been feeling left out of the GPS party so far. Not for much longer though, as the switch for its home grown Beidou system has just been flicked on, providing location and timing data to its home turf. There are ten satellites already in place and six more to follow next year, by which time, most of the Asia Pacific will be covered. The rest of the globe will be taken care of by 2020, once all of the planned 35 satellites are sent up. So, while we may not see something like iPhone support right away, it might be handy to study the Interface Control Document the Chinese government's put online anyway, y'know, just in case.

Japan, China agree to restart talks on regional FTA

BEIJING, Dec 25 (Reuters) - Japan and China have agreed to restart talks soon on a northeast Asian free trade pact that would also include South Korea, Japanese Prime Minister Yoshihiko Noda said on Sunday after talks in the Chinese capital with Premier Wen Jiabao.

'We discussed how we need to resume talks on a free trade pact among Japan, China and South Korea early next year, and we reached an agreement on that point,' Noda told reporters after his meeting with Wen.

Despite sometimes rancorous political ties between the two neighbours, Japan's economic fortunes are increasingly tied to China's economic growth and consumer demand.

China has been Japan's biggest trading partner since 2009.

In 2010, trade between the two nations grew by 22.3 percent compared to levels in 2009, reaching 26.5 trillion yen ($339.3 billion), according to the Japan External Trade Organization.

China and Japan are also the world's first and second-biggest holders of foreign reserves.
