IPhone appeal dims as Samsung shines

NEW YORK (AP) -- The latest iPhone looks much the same as the first iPhone, which came out more than five years ago. That hasn't been a problem for Apple - until, now.

The pace of iPhone sales has slowed, Apple revealed last week. Part of the problem is that the competition has found a formula that works: thinner phones with big screens that make the iPhone look small and chubby.

For a dose of smartphone envy, iPhone owners need to look no further than Samsung Electronics Co., the number-one maker of smartphones in the world. Its newest flagship phone, the Galaxy S III, is sleek and wafer-thin.

By comparison, the iPhone "is getting a bit long in the tooth," says Ramon Llamas, an analyst with research firm IDC.

Apple has become the world's most valuable company on the back of the iPhone, which makes up nearly half of its revenue. IPhone sales are still growing, but the question of how fast they're growing is of keen interest to investors. The iPhone certainly has room to grow: only one in six smartphones sold globally in the second quarter had an Apple logo on its back.

When Apple reported financial results for its latest quarter last week, a new phenomenon was revealed: Buyers started pulling back on iPhone purchases just six months after the launch of the latest iPhone model.

Apple executives blamed the tepid sales on "rumors and speculation" that may have caused some consumers to wait for the next iPhone, which is due in the fall. But in the past, iPhone sales have stayed strong nine months after the new model is launched, then dipped as people began holding off, waiting for the new model.

In the April to June period, Apple sold 26 million phones, 28 percent more than it did in the same quarter last year.

Most other phone makers "would kill" for those numbers, says Stephen Baker, an analyst with research firm NPD Group.

The exception is Samsung, which has solidified its position at the world's largest maker of smartphones. Analysts believe it made just over 50 million smartphones in the second quarter, or nearly twice as many as Apple. (The company doesn't release specific figures.) Its smartphone sales have nearly tripled in a year.

Most of Samsung's sales comprise cheaper smartphones that don't compete directly with the iPhone. Its flagship phones, though, have emerged as the iPhone's chief rivals.

Samsung and Apple have a complicated relationship. They're rivals in the smartphone and tablet-computer markets, and are set to square off in a high-profile trial over mobile patents in San Francisco this week. Samsung is one of Apple's largest suppliers of chips and displays, and Apple is one of Samsung's largest clients.

Though Apple is known as a relentless innovator, the iPhone's screen has been the same size - 3.5 inches on the diagonal - since the first iPhone came out. It was a big screen for the time, but among the competition, screen sizes have crept up.

Samsung has increased the screen size of its Galaxy series with every model since it debuted in 2010. The Galaxy S had a screen that measured 4 inches diagonally, and was followed by the S II, at 4.3 inches. The S III, the latest model, measures 4.8 inches. The screen is nearly twice as large as the iPhone's. Yet the Galaxy is thinner and lighter than an iPhone.

Samsung has also achieved surprising success with an even bigger phone, the Samsung Galaxy Note. Its 5.3-inch screen makes it somewhat awkward to hold to the ear, but customers don't seem to mind, or perhaps they value the large screen and included stylus more.

Aside from design, Apple is inflexible in another way: by releasing a new phone only one per year, it lets the competition create new phones with features the iPhone doesn't have and lets them go unchallenged, at least until the new iPhone comes out.

"Apple's schedule leaves the other ten or nine months of the year wide open for everybody else," says Llamas.

For instance, the newest Samsung phones can use the latest high-speed data networks in the U.S., and talk to payment terminals in stores, so they can act as smart "credit cards."

Samsung times its product launches to take maximum advantage of the lull in iPhone sales that usually precedes the launch of a new model. The S III went on sale in Europe in May and in the U.S. in June.

The rest of the competition is in disarray, and hasn't been able to capitalize in the same way on Apple's rigid release schedule and conservative design. Nokia Corp., until recently the world's largest phone maker, is in sharp retreat and is conducting a complete revamp of its smartphones. Research In Motion Ltd. is stuck with outdated software for its BlackBerrys at least until it launches a new operating system next year. HTC Corp. of Taiwan is suffering from marketing missteps in the last few years. LG Electronics, another Korean company, hasn't been able to keep up with Samsung when it comes to high-end phones, or with cheaper manufacturers on the low end.

Together, Samsung and Apple make half of the world's smartphones, and since competitors are losing money or breaking even, account for nearly all of the profits in the industry.

"Samsung is the only company that didn't really buckle under the weight of the iPhone 4S. Good, solid devices and good, solid marketing behind them," Llamas says.

Analysts now expect the new iPhone to arrive in September or October, probably with a slightly bigger screen. Sticking to one screen size has served Apple well, Baker says, but he sees the company moving with the times, as it's done many times before.

"When they have the reputation and the brand loyalty that they have, you don't have to be the first to market" with new features, Baker says. "You don't have to take that risk."

How Marine Boat Insurance Works | Content for Reprint

Author: Tony Lord | Total views: 116 Comments: 0
Word Count: 694 Date:

If you are familiar with motor insurance policies then most of the ideas behind that hold over to the marine watercraft insurance world. But there are numerous important distinctions and this article is here to help you understand the vital ins and outs of marine boat insurance. Reading this before confirming your insurance contract can save you thousands of dollars in premiums or provide you much better payments in the event of a claim.

A fundamental point about boat insurance is that just about all marine policies are formulated as "All Risks" plans. However, the thinking is not over yet as "All Risks" only stands for all risks ? aside from the detailed exclusions and for stipulated boat usage and inside of a given region or water type. So some extra work is required to guarantee that risks to which you could be exposed are either acceptable to you or are not on the company's yacht insurance exclusions list.

Very occasionally a boat policy quote may be provided for "named perils" and will protect the most frequent hazards such as fire, theft and weather effects. Policies like these are able to charge substantially reduced premiums ? but that is due to the fact that you, as the watercraft owner, are left substantially more vulnerable than with a standard policy. An example of this could be a claim arising from vandalism where no theft or fire has happened. Any such policy requires very careful examination before it is embraced.

Exclusions are a vital aspect for you to consider your boat's policy proposal for long lasting confidence, and also one of the main differentiators between policies and insurance providers. With an 'All Risks' watercraft insurance policy everything is protected apart from those items and causes listed, so some thorough reviewing is required. Each and every firm seems to employ a unique lineup of exceptions, so in this article are several common ones for you to take into account.

Losses brought on by or arising from wear and tear, routine deterioration, attacks by marine life and insects as well as mold and mildew and weathering are commonly excluded from your watercraft's insurance cover. Having said that, on new craft (up to four or five years old) you may have the chance to negotiate 'new for old' on particular objects. Other hull areas frequently omitted are blistering and osmosis in fiberglass, deficiencies in initial design or fabrication and corrosion.

Your motor and power train is an very expensive part of your motor boat and it is not unheard of to find exclusions in this area of boat or yacht insurance. Failure of individual components is not an uncommon exclusion, however consequential damage ought to be included. So, as an example, if your oil pump breaks down it would not be covered, but the repair works to the other parts of the engine should be.

But your boat almost definitely does not live its entire existence on the water. Here's yet another area where organizations differ in their approach to marine insurance exclusions. Think about lifting the boat from the water. Who insures your sail boat whist it sits in the sling and being brought up by a crane? Don't presume or suppose, slides here are not unfamiliar and, if they occur, are generally catastrophic with respect to the boat.

Then there's the on-land storage. Though the boat is safely and securely propped over the winter on the hard standing , who deals with damages to your fixtures and furnishing caused by over wintering creatures who identify a warm spot on board shielded from the elements? Check your marine insurance does!

And then finally there's over land transportation. Exclusion riders here on your boat insurance should have very thorough checking to make certain this hazardous aspect of your boating life is appropriately addressed. It doesn't matter if it a jetski hauled at the rear of your automobile or a large luxury yacht on a low loader, make sure you obtain the correct boat insurance cover in place.

To your boating enjoyment!

Olympic Infringers | G&A Legal - Learn About Trademark Attorney ...

This is a great articles about the infringers of Olympic ring trademarks reprinted by Pollie Gautsch G&A Legal:

The Olympics are about to begin, and?the London Organizing Committee of the Olympic Games has been notoriously strict about the use by non-sponsors of items such as the Olympic?rings, the word ?Olympics,? and even the use of certain words in advertising.

Using two of the following words ?games,? ?two thousand and twelve,? ?2012,? or ?twenty twelve? together, or combining one of those with ?gold,? ?silver,? ?bronze,? ?London,? ?medals,? ?sponsor,? or ?summer? is prohibited in advertising (by non-sponsors) or on products/merchandise when used in a context that could suggest an association with the 2012 Olympic Games.

Of course, not all non-sponsors are willing to completely shy away from the lure of the Olympic games, and several have come up with creative ways to circumvent LOCOG?s rules ? sometimes, it seems, just to thumb their noses at LOCOG. By canvasing Twitter, CBC News has collected several amusing photos of businesses and billboards in London that are doing just that.

News: Air Canada goes green and goes for gold

With the departure this morning of Air Canada?s flight AC864 Montreal-London, the airline will operate its second biofuel-powered flight which is expected to generate up to 10 per cent fewer emissions by using jet fuel derived from recycled cooking oil and through other fuel-saving measures.

?As the Official Airline of the Canadian Olympic and Paralympic Teams, Air Canada is proud to be flying Canadian athletes to London.? Just as our athletes strive for excellence in their athletic performance, Air Canada strives for excellence in its environmental performance,? said Dave Legge, Senior Vice President - Operations at Air Canada.

Twenty per cent of the fuel required by the Airbus A330 used to operate this flight will be a 50/50 mix of regular jet fuel and biofuel derived from recycled cooking oil. This blend produced by SkyNRG has been recertified to normal jet fuel standards and can be safely used without modifying the aircraft?s systems.

?Airbus is proud to be part of the world?s first transatlantic bio fuel flight using an A330. Like the sports stars on board, we too have goals. More than 90 per cent of Airbus Research and Technology is directed at setting new records in environmental performance, including speeding up sustainable alternative fuel production and keeping the world connected,? said Andrea Debban?, Airbus Vice President Environmental Affairs.

The Airbus A330 will be powered by Rolls-Royce Trent 700s, which are the cleanest, quietest and most efficient engines available for the Airbus A330.? Rolls-Royce spends nearly $1.58 billion a year on research and development, in the relentless pursuit of innovative technology and product optimization. The Trent 700 benefits from this significant investment through continuous improvements in the engine?s efficiency and further reduction of its impact on the environment.

Air Canada?s first biofuel flight was on June 18, 2012 between Toronto and Mexico City as part of a series of commercial biofuel flights that took the secretary general of ICAO to the United Nations conference on Sustainable Development held in Rio de Janeiro.

Air Canada also uses other techniques and measures on its flights to reduce impact on the environment. These include:

Pre-flight maintenance preparation:
*? Fuselage wash and wax to improve aerodynamics
*? Engine compressor wash to increase efficiency

Pre-flight operations:
*? Minimising emissions from on-board Auxiliary Power Unit (APU) through use of ground power at gate and use of conditioned air
*? Taxiing the aircraft to the runway with one engine
*? Minimising taxi time to runway
Take-off:

Reduced thrust take-off
*? Air conditioning adjusted to save power

Climb:
*? Immediate turn towards destination
*? Optimised climb to optimal cruise altitude

Cruise:
*? In conjunction with NavCanada ENGAGE programme, optimised cruise speed and altitude
*? Most direct flight routing

Descent:
*? Constant descent using optimized descent rate along most direct routing

Arrival:
*? Direct taxi to gate with minimal delay
*? Taxiing the aircraft with one engine
*? Minimising use of APU at gate through use of ground power.

Drum Loops

Many of today's modern artists such as electronic musicians and filmmakers need to use digital media sources and computer equipment to help them create their magic. Thankfully, the advent of the Internet means that established and up-and-coming musicians, producers and filmmakers can easily download a wide array of WAV hip hop samples and drum loops that can help them to create new and exciting electronic music productions, flash projects and video productions.

Electronic music production Electronic music producers frequently need downloaded drum loops to help them with their projects. In fact, some producers download loops to help them fill out a current music track, while others find starting a track with a few isolated loops is the easiest way to get their creative juices flowing. Furthermore, some producers prefer to cut up loops so that they can mesh together a certain vibe that they're looking for, while others prefer to layer their loops by downloading various different bassline loops, synth loops etc, etc.

Flash projects Flash music loops can be downloaded and used by anyone who is developing Flash websites. Unsurprisingly, Flash hip hop loops are very popular at the moment as many of today's websites are looking to embrace urban styles and flavours. Video production Regardless of whether it is for a multi media, video or even a custom production, video producers often need to download audio loops to use in their productions.

Today all over the world, many musicians & music producers use digital hardware also known as DAW and software devices to create and manipulate loops, often in conjunction with various electronic musical effects and plugins. In the early 1990s dedicated digital devices were invented specifically for use in live looping i.e. loops that are recorded in front of a live audience. Many hardware loopers exist in rack unit, effect pedal or other forms. Early examples of rack and pedal loopers are the Gibson Echoplex, Looperlative LP1, DigiTech JamMan and the Electro-Harmonix Second Delay.

Downloaded loops can be incredibly beneficial for filmmakers as they can help to make video production editing processes far easier. Quite simply, high-quality loops and hip hop samples give established and up-and-coming musicians, producers and filmmakers the tools they need to create something completely new and unique, thereby offering them the ability to indulge in the kind of experimentation that can lead to unimpeded creative success.

A major advantage of looping that it can be used continually, and not have the quality degradation that is inherent when musician playing a musical part repeatedly (human error). Additionally there can be huge cost savings, on the production end.

If there is a dispute over coverage, it is their responsibility to prove why it isn?t covered. There are a few policies where this doesn?t apply so make sure to check that when signing up for coverage.

To help save money on car insurance, start with a car that is cheaper to insure. Buying a sporty car with a large V-8 engine can push your annual insurance premium to double what it would be for a smaller, less flashy car with a 4 cylinder engine that saves gas at the same time.

Use the internet to get your car insurance plan. The internet is incredibly useful. Not only will you not have to deal with the hassle of going to the insurance provider yourself, you will also get a better deal if you shop for it online. Shopping online saves the provider money. Consequently, you save money as well.

Before buying a new car, you should research the frequency with which the particular model is targeted by thieves and vandals in your area. Cars that are popular with thieves are unpopular with auto insurance companies. They can and will charge a higher rate for a model that is especially attractive to criminals.

Acer Aspire S5-391-9880

The Acer Aspire S5-391-9880 is aptly named. It aspires to be something special, to combine beautiful design with uncompromising performance, to be a premium ultrabook worth every penny of its $1,399.99 (direct) price. It achieves most of its goals, just not quite enough of them. The Aspire S5 offers strong performance and is equipped with a Thunderbolt port?a lightning-fast 10Gbps port previously seen only on Apple laptops?but it falls short of delivering the sort of user experience we expect from a machine in this price range. The end result is an ultrabook that is perfectly adequate, if slightly dissatisfying.

Design
The Acer Aspire S5 has a unique design, anchored with Acer's MagicFlip I/O Panel, a powered hatch on the back of the system. With the press of a button, this concealed panel opens up, revealing the laptop's ports. This motorized panel is a neat idea, but the execution leaves something to be desired. Port covers of plastic or rubber are already needless and irritating, but when pressing the button to open the hatch?which you'll need to do anytime you want to plug in anything other than headphones?it opens slowly with an electronic grinding sound. It's not a sound that inspires confidence, and I came away from testing worried that, with long-term use, the hatch might not always open and I'd thus have no access to even basic ports. Even if nothing ever goes wrong with the panel, it's still an inconvenience that introduces another potential point of failure into the design but adds nothing to the user experience.

While we're picking on the design flaws, let's talk about a couple more. The chiclet-style keyboard is adequate, but on a laptop at this price it should be backlit. And last but not least, though the clickpad is large and responsive, it doesn't have any marks or textures to distinguish the right and left buttons from the touch surface. Because the entire surface is clickable, users may find themselves frequently right-clicking unintentionally.

The display is a little underwhelming, with the same 1,366-by-768 resolution seen on much cheaper systems instead of something to match the 1,920-by-1,080 display found on the Asus Zenbook Prime UX32VD-DB71 ($1,299 list, 4 stars), or even the 1,600-by-900 screen of the Dell XPS 14 (Summer 2012) ($1,499 direct, 3.5 stars). The Aspire S5's built-in speakers are similarly average; they're adequate for understanding video dialogue, but audiophiles won't be satisfied by their puny bass and overall flat quality.

These little issues are easy to pick out because the rest of the design is so good. The keyboard is slightly recessed, not with a cookie-cutter inset, but with a subtle curved deck. Burnished black aluminum covers the lid and palm rest, and a magnesium-alloy frame keeps things durable and light, though the screen bezel and underside of the laptop are black plastic. It's a look very similar to that of the HP Envy 4-1043cl ($1,034.99 direct, 4 stars). The laptop is also very thin, measuring 0.59 by 12.6 by 8.9 inches (HWD), but it's worth mentioning that the Aspire S5 measures less than 0.6 inch thick when closed. Open the MagicFlip panel and the Aspire S5 fattens up to nearly a full inch. It's also light, weighing a scant 2.58 pounds, lighter than the 2.85-pound class-defining Apple MacBook Air 13-inch (Mid 2012) ($1,199 direct, 4 stars).

Features
Although the wisdom of the MagicFlip I/O panel design may be questionable, the ports that are on it offer some of the best options found on an ultrabook. Two USB 3.0 ports offer speedy connectivity for peripherals and drives, while a full-size HDMI output lets you connect to an HDTV without an adapter. But the real treat is the inclusion of Intel's Thunderbolt technology, which has thus far been somewhat exclusive to Apple products. The Thunderbolt port physically resembles a Mini DisplayPort jack?actually, it is one?and can be used to hook up an external display?but it also offers unparalleled speed. Thunderbolt-equipped peripherals are still rare, and mostly appeal to niche groups like video professionals, but as the technology goes mainstream other uses are sure to arise.

A 256GB solid-state drive (SSD) in the Acer Aspire S5 offers twice the storage capacity of the 128GB options found in the Sony VAIO T13 (SVT13112FXS) ($799.99 direct, 4 stars) and Apple MacBook Air 13-inch (Mid 2012), but can't match the capacity of traditional hard drives like the 500GB drive found in the HP Envy 4-1043cl or the Lenovo IdeaPad U310 ($799.99 direct, 4 stars). What the SSD does offer, however, is speedy performance, fast boot times, and near-instant waking from sleep. You'll also find plenty of software already on the drive when you first power it up. The desktop is cluttered with links to popular Web services like Netflix, Skype, and eBay, along with icons for Acer's own utilities like Clear.fi, a proprietary media-sharing solution that uses your home network, and Acer Cloud, which bolsters the 256GB drive with cloud storage. Acer covers the Aspire S5 with a one-year warranty.

Performance
Acer Aspire S5-391-9880 The Acer Aspire S5 is equipped with a third-generation Intel Core i7-3517U low-voltage processor, paired with 4GB of RAM. With the additional help of that speedy SSD, the powerful dual-core processor helped the Aspire S5 to score 5,053 in Futuremark PCMark 7, easily besting other top performers like the Core i5?equipped HP Envy 4-1043cl (3,962), and doubling the score of the Asus Zenbook Prime UX32VD, which scored 2,523 due to its slower spinning hard drive. In CineBench R11.5, however, the results were slightly different. The Aspire S5's score of 2.77 still beat Core i5?equipped systems like the Sony VAIO T13 (2.32 points) or the Lenovo IdeaPad U310 (2.39), but the Asus Zenbook Prime UX32VD's faster processor help it earn a class-leading score of 3.58.

Acer Aspire S5-391-9880

In multimedia tests, the Acer Aspire offered decent performance and speed, cranking through Photoshop and Handbrake in decent times, but trailing behind the Asus Zenbook Prime, which added a discrete Nvidia graphics processor to the mix. Although the Aspire S5 makes the most of its integrated graphics processing (Intel HD Graphics 4000), it was unable to produce playable scores in either of our gaming tests.

The Acer Aspire seals its 34Wh battery out of owners' reach, but in MobileMark 2007 it lasted 6 hours 33 minutes. By comparison, competitors lasted longer, like the HP Envy 4-1043cl (7:45) and the Sony VAIO T13 (7:18). The Aspire did, however, outlast the Asus Zenbook Prime UX32VD (5:26).

The Acer Aspire S5 certainly offers strong performance and a beautiful design, but it's a mixed bag with strange design quirks and several features that fall flat. Frankly, the biggest issue with the Acer Aspire S5 isn't the MagicFlip panel, or any of its other design flaws?it's the price. At $1,400, this is one of the more expensive ultrabooks on the market, but aside from a marginally thinner profile and a Thunderbolt port it fails to deliver the features or experience you expect in that price range. Compared with the Editors' Choice Asus Zenbook Prime UX32VD-DB71, which offers better performance thanks in part to a discrete GPU, it's hard to give the Acer Aspire S5 anything more than a lukewarm recommendation.

Tech Gets Sporty: Mobile Business and Usage at 2012 London ...

It seems like marketers are hoping to win bigger than the athletes at the 2012 London Olympic Games. Leading brands like Coca Cola and Visa are launching their largest, multi-dimensional marketing campaigns for the Games. The three tech companies (of 11 total corporate sponsors), Samsung, Acer and Panasonic, are outnumbered by other businesses sponsoring the games. Still, a recent Essendex infographic suggests all the mobile activity surrounding the events promises a big return on tech investment.

Olympic fans around the world are using their phones to watch the games, share their favorite moments, and keep up with the latest news and results. The BBC will feature 2,500 hours of mobile coverage on tablets, mobile phones and internet connected televisions.

Samsung?s Galaxy S III, it?s latest Android, is the official phone of the games. Samsung is providing a special edition of the Galaxy S III with a Visa payment app that includes a NFC (Near Field Communications) feature to make purchases at Visa?s PayWave kiosks across the Olympic grounds and London. The NFC allows for easy payment by simply tapping the phone at a booth; According to Joanna Stern of ABC News, there are over 140,000 payment terminals across the United Kingdom.

The 29.4 million international visitors to the UK will enjoy access to the 500,000 wi-fi hotspots set up for the London games. 87% of people state they will use social media or text about the summer Olympics.

After Camille Lacourt?s Gold Medal win for swimming, a friend revealed his cell phone number on French TV. Soon after, Lacourt received 7,000 SMS messages. Mobile communication is as fast as it is pervasive: ?2, 117, 180 SMS messages can be sent worldwide in the time it takes Jamaica?s Usain Bolt to run his 100 meter record of 9.58 seconds!?

MILAN (AP) ? American directors dominated the competition lineup announced Thursday for this year's slimmed-down Venice Film Festival aimed at making the world's oldest movie festival easier to take in.

Brian De Palma and Terrence Malick are among 18 filmmakers competing for the coveted Golden Lion during the 69th edition of the festival, which runs from Aug. 29-Sept. 8. In keeping with recent tradition, a secret film, the 18th entry, will be announced at a later date.

Creative director Alberto Barbera returned this year to the festival he directed from 1998-2002 with a pledge to trim down the number of movies screened overall in order to allow festival-goers the possibility to watch "at least almost everything." More recent editions have seen as many as 24 films in competition, and well over 100 screened in all the side events.

"I think the tendency is a little bulimic, to focus on quantity doesn't serve anything," Barbera said in a phone interview with The Associated Press. "Having more films does not create a more important festival, rather it means lowering the quality of the selection. The festival has to assume the responsibility and the risk of making a real selection."

Barbera said his goal was to focus on both the achievements of known filmmakers, and seeking new talent.

"There shouldn't be any automatic choices of any kind. Just because there is a film ready by a big director does not mean it needs to go in the festival."

This year, a total of 60 films will be shown, 50 of which are world premieres. That's from a pool of 1,459 feature films and 1,772 short films previewed.

Barbera also is presiding over the filling of the enormous construction pit that has scarred the Lido festival grounds in recent years. It was supposed to be the site of a grand Palazzo del Cinema, but the grandiose project ran out of money and is being scaled back.

"The famous hole is being filled in during these days, and they are reasphalting the square. There will be a piazza in front of the Casino like before," he said.

Within the next three years, current facilities will be renovated and modernized, including the addition of a couple of projection rooms at the Casino. Barbera also is launching the festival's first market ? acknowledging that he erred in thinking that a physical market place was not necessary in an Internet-driven era.

"I was completely wrong, because the festivals with the most development are those with a big market," he said, citing Cannes and Berlin.

Barbera's slimming touch means Venice has chosen a decisive profile to contrast itself with Toronto, which overlaps with Venice and will feature 350 films.

Barbera told a news conference in Rome that he agonized over which movies to let in, "losing some friends ... also gaining some others," along the way.

"I forgot how dramatic and difficult it was to choose and call directors that I admire and respect the most and say to them: 'Your film has not been chosen'," he said.

Both De Palma's sexy thriller "Passion" and Malick's romance "To The Wonder" star actress Rachel McAdams. It is De Palma's first feature film since "Redacted," which won Venice's award for best direction in 2007.

Ramin Bahrani will premier "At Any Price," a film set in the competitive world of modern agriculture and starring Zac Efron, Dennis Quaid and Heather Graham, while fellow American Harmony Korine will show his comedy-romance "Spring Breakers," starring James Franco, Selena Gomez and Vanessa Hudgens.

Besides the four U.S. directors, three Italians will premier films, including Marco Bellocchio with "Bella Addormentata," inspired by the real-life case of a young Italian woman whose family waged a battle to remove her feeding tube after she was left comatose by an accident.

Otherwise, the broad field includes films from France, Israel, Japan, Russia, South Korea and the Philippines.

Many of the films in competition are co-productions, with France taking the lead with seven. De Palma's film does not get U.S. billing at all, but is rather a French-German production.

Golden Lion-winner Mira Nair opens the festival with "The Reluctant Fundamentalist," starring Riz Ahmed, Kat Hudson, Kiefer Sutherland and Liev Schreiber. The film, which is being shown out of competition, is based on the best-selling book about a young Pakistani Wall Street analyst who gets swept into conflict in his homeland following Sept. 11. Nair won the Golden lion in 2001 for "Monsoon Wedding."

Barbera said the upcoming festival puts an emphasis on world cinema and also directors who are not household names. He also noted one-third of the films showing at the festival were directed by women ? something that happened by chance, he said, since he usually doesn't look at the director's name ahead of time.

"There is a huge crisis in the world right now, the whole system. But there are also many new ferments, new countries that are working, new authors, new ways of making films at low cost but with complete professionalism," Barbera said.

"It is a moment of transition, a moment of crisis, but a moment of great opportunity."

Affiliate Earning Potential in Online Gaming ? By Jeff Stevens

Savvy affiliate marketers are constantly clamoring for the ?next big thing? that will provide undiluted opportunities with massive potential.

In-browser online games and downloadable gaming apps are rapidly becoming just that: the next big thing in affiliate marketing.

While advertising in online gaming or through downloadable apps is nothing new, recent advances in technology and commissioning techniques have provided affiliates and app developers a largely unexplored medium that offers unlimited earning potential.

Why So Angry, Birds?
Gaming in a networked environment has existed for decades. However, only in the last few years has this vertical truly exploded.

Case in point: Rovio Entertainment Ltd, the creator of the Angry Birds franchise, announced that in 2011 the company?s total revenue was $106.3 million, driven mostly by their online Games and Advertising divisions.

With 2011 statistics such as 648 million game downloads and 200 million active users, it?s no surprise that they report 10 billion ad impressions every month. Again, consider the fact that this traffic is all being generated by closed-circuit game apps.

How Can Affiliates Benefit?
While online gaming has been around for years, earning potential associated with online games and gaming apps is relatively new. Thanks to recent advances in tracking technology and commissioning models, affiliates and game developers are now able to create revenue streams that never existed before.

Until recently, the predominant affiliate commissioning model in online gaming was on a cost-per-signup or cost-per-install (?CPI?) model, where affiliates were paid when the app or game was downloaded and installed.

While it?s the easiest to track and commission, the CPI model is limited to a singular action in which the affiliate receives a one-time payout for the up-front action.

Show Me the Rev Share!
As more and more games and apps are created, game developers are wisely turning to revenue-share payouts as a method to recruit and retain top gaming affiliates.

Treating the install/download as merely the starting point, affiliates who take part in a revenue-share gaming model continue to earn on any subsequent revenue-generating transactions that the player makes within the game.

While the technology that tracks subsequent conversions can be complex, the concept is simple. Upon successful game or app install, a relationship between player and affiliate is created. As the player continues through a lifecycle of a game performing such actions as buying in-game upgrades, making new level purchases, exchanging virtual currency, or engaging in any type of activity that generates new revenue, the affiliate reaps the benefits of ongoing commissions.

The player-engagement model is effective only if the proper tracking and commissioning infrastructure is in place to tie affiliates to these ongoing player conversions.

As this lucrative vertical continues to evolve, the most successful affiliate marketing programs will incorporate a combination of cost-per-install payouts along with ongoing player-engagement commissions.

Could affiliate marketing in the online gaming vertical be your next big thing?
