AP Exclusive: Nigeria secret police details leaked

LAGOS, Nigeria (AP) ? Personnel records of former and current members of Nigeria's top domestic spy agency, including home addresses and names of immediate family members, leaked onto the Internet in a threatening message that claimed to come from a radical Islamist sect that's killed hundreds of people this year alone, The Associated Press has learned.

The leak of personal data of more than 60 past and current employees of Nigeria's State Security Service remained easily accessible on the Internet for days and had details about the agency's director-general, including his mobile phone number, bank account particulars and contact information for his son.

Many of agents listed who could be reached by the AP said they received no official warning from the spy agency that their information had been posted online nor been otherwise alerted. The material has been deleted from the comment section of a website, but the security breach astonished spy service veterans and calls into question whether Nigeria's intelligence community, whose agents already have released suspected terrorists out of religious and ethnic sympathies, are too compromised from within to stop the violence now plaguing Africa's most populous nation.

A senior Nigerian intelligence official said authorities were aware that the leak had happened and that many were embarrassed by it. He spoke on condition of anonymity as information about the leak was not to have been made public.

Marilyn Ogar, a spokeswoman for the State Security Service, declined to answer questions Thursday about the posting of the information.

The State Security Service, created in 1986 by then-military ruler Gen. Ibrahim Babangida, monitors domestic dissent in Nigeria, an oil-rich nation of more than 160 million people. Though geared toward stopping terrorism and destabilizing coups, the agency routinely faces criticism for targeting government critics. In Abuja, Nigeria's capital, the agency operates out of cars made to look like the many green taxis that roam the streets. Plain-clothed agents of the service routinely question foreign journalists at airports, border crossings and on city streets if they see reporters conducting interviews. Agents carrying assault rifles often guard major events in the country.

Many agents for the typically secretive agency are preoccupied with concealing their identities, as most try to blend unnoticed into society.

The information leak came in two postings earlier this month on a website that provides rewritten news on Nigeria. The first posting threatened to kill agents of the State Security Service on behalf of Boko Haram, a radical Islamist sect responsible for more than 660 killings this year alone in Nigeria. The second posting simply offered a block of text containing biographical and other details about the agents.

Though the comments have been removed, the AP is not identifying the website involved as cached versions of the comments remain online and intelligence service agents have been killed by Boko Haram members in the past.

The list includes former and current agents across the country, including Director-General Ekpeyong Ita. Those reached by the AP who were willing to talk expressed disbelief that sensitive information like that could make its way to the Internet.

"I was shocked to see my details posted on the Internet," said one former agent, who declined to be named out of safety concerns. "I've not heard anything from anybody. I was surprised that such information could be leaked."

Another man on the list said he simply once served as a doctor to help the agency on an on-call basis only. The list appeared to include lower-ranking agents, as well as one-time state directors for the agency.

Some of those contacted suggested that the list appeared to come from the agency's pension department, as it mostly included retirees and listed bank account information for nearly all those named. It was not immediately clear if the information had been hacked from the outside and obtained or taken out by an agency employee or someone with access to the material.

The release of the information comes as Nigeria's intelligence agencies have made a series of blunders in trying to fight Boko Haram in Africa's most populous country, with some likely influenced by ethnic or religious sentiments. Intelligence agencies allegedly released a suspected Islamic radical in 2007 who later masterminded Boko Haram's suicide car bombing of the U.N. headquarters in August 2011 that killed at least 25 people and wounded more than 100 others, officials previously told the AP. A leaked U.S. diplomatic cable also show U.S. officials complained in 2008 about Nigeria's government quietly releasing other suspects into the custody of Islamic leaders as part of a program it called "Perception Management."

Another U.S. diplomatic cable complains that State Security Service agents nearly let a suspected bomb maker trained by the Somali terror group al-Shabab onto an international flight, despite an Interpol notice for his arrest. The agents who allegedly tried to release Mohamed Ibrahim Ahmed "not only knew about the Interpol notice, but simply said they did not want to hold him any longer," the February 2010 cable read.

Ahmed, an Eritrean, pleaded guilty to charges in June in a U.S. federal court that he supported terrorism by associating with al-Shabab, a terror group with links to al-Qaida. He faces up to 10 years in prison.

Most of those on the leaked list of agents reached by the AP said no one from the federal government or the spy agency warned them that their personnel information had appeared on the Internet. Instead, colleagues and other former agents called each other to spread the news and later contacted the State Security Service themselves to report the breach.

It is unclear if the person who posted the information online really does have ties to Boko Haram, which has targeted security officials in the past. Violence has been centered mostly in the country's Muslim north. One retired agent who spoke to AP said he was grateful he lives in the largely Christian south, away from the sect's attacks.

"It's worrying that they have access to that," the agent said. "Those living in Abuja (and the north) are the ones who should living in fear."

Tsunami warning after 7.9 quake strikes off Philippines

MANILA (Reuters) - An earthquake of 7.6 magnitude struck off the Philippines on Friday destroying roads and bridges and sending people fleeing to higher ground in fear of a tsunami.

The quake was centered off the east coast, 91 miles off the town of Guiuan in Samar province at a depth of about 20 miles, the U.S. Geological Survey said.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center issued a tsunami warning for much of the region, but later scaled it back leaving it in place for the Philippines and Indonesia.

"People are fleeing to higher ground," Samar congressman, Ben Evardone, told local radio.

A disaster agency official said residents in the area should get to higher ground immediately.

"Strong earthquake here in Taft, Eastern Samar! And it lasted very long too!" Evardone said by text message earlier. He said the quake had destroyed some roads and bridges.

There were no immediate reports of casualties.

A radio reporter in Leyte province, near Samar, said people had run out of their homes when the quake struck. "It felt like we were being rocked," he said.

The tsunami warning was initially issued for the Philippines, Japan, Indonesia, Taiwan, Papua New Guinea and other islands in the Pacific including the U.S. state of Hawaii.

The region has been hit by devastating quakes in the past decade. At least 230,000 people in 13 Indian Ocean countries were killed in a quake and tsunami off Indonesia in 2004.

Last year, an earthquake and tsunami off Japan's northeastern coast killed about 20,000 people and triggered the world's worst nuclear crisis in 25 years after waves battered a nuclear power station.

His campaign hopes the evening ends with Americans feeling a little bit closer to the Republican presidential candidate, too. (AP Photo/Evan Vucci, File)

After years of avoiding direct mention of his religion, Mitt Romney will open up about his Mormon faith as he accepts the Republican nomination for president.

The former Massachusetts governor is the first Mormon presidential candidate on a major party ticket. It's unclear just how much detail he will provide on Thursday night, the pinnacle of the Republican National Convention in Tampa, Fla. He has spoken broadly in the past about the importance of prayer and belief in God, but has not discussed the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

"I think this is a speech where he's going to talk a lot about what's informed his values, what's informed his outlook. Of course his faith is an important part of that," Romney aide Kevin Madden said in Tampa this week. "It's an important part of who he is as a husband and a father. And so I think you can expect some of that."

Starting in the 1980s, Romney was a bishop in the Boston suburb of Belmont, a job akin to the pastor of a congregation. He then served as a stake president, the top Mormon authority in his region, which meant he presided over several congregations in a district similar to a diocese.

He counseled Latter-day Saints on their most personal concerns, regarding marriage, parenting, finances and faith. He worked with immigrant converts from Haiti, Cambodia and other countries.

Grant Bennett, an assistant to Romney at the Belmont congregation, has in the past described how Romney built relationships with other religious groups around his Belmont, Mass., hometown, after a suspicious fire in 1984 destroyed a new Mormon meeting house there.

Bennett told delegates Thursday that Romney had "a listening ear and a helping hand." He said Romney devoted as many as 20 hours a week at his own expense.

Ted and Pat Oparowski, also fellow Mormons, recalled how Romney helped their dying son write his will. And Pam Finlayson, who belonged to Romney's congregation, remembered him stroking the back of her prematurely born daughter during a hospital visit and bringing over Thanksgiving dinner.

Only Bennett used the full name of the church when speaking about Romney's years of service.

Other convention speakers had already laid a foundation for this new faith emphasis. In his acceptance speech Wednesday night, vice presidential nominee Paul Ryan, a Roman Catholic, said "our different faiths come together in the same moral creed."

Ann Romney, in a speech meant to show a more personal side of her husband, described the early challenges they faced as a couple, including religious differences. "I was Episcopalian. He was a Mormon," she said. The reference was striking given that the Romneys almost never use the word Mormon on the campaign trail.

Republican evangelicals have been playing down conflict with Latter-day Saints. Most prominently, former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee, speaking from the podium Wednesday night, said, "I care far less as to where Mitt Romney takes his family to church, than I do about where he takes this country."

Huckabee, a Southern Baptist pastor before he entered politics, had publicly questioned Mormon beliefs when he was competing against Romney in the 2008 presidential primary. Most Christians don't consider Latter-day Saints part of traditional Christianity, although Mormons do.

Romney has struggled to navigate as a member of a religious minority seeking the nation's highest office.

Since Mormons generally live in concentrated communities in the Mountain West and California, few Americans have met a Latter-day Saint. Most Mormons said they were stunned by the open expression of prejudice against their church during Romney's first bid for the White House.

In his 2008 campaign, Romney openly courted evangelicals, who make up about a quarter of the electorate and are a critical part of the Republican base. He stressed the beliefs he shared with Christian conservatives about Christ and the Bible, and he promised he would not be influenced on policy by the leaders of the LDS church. This year, he has done little public outreach with Protestant conservatives and, until now, has largely separated his Mormonism from his campaign.

"He's trying to find the right register, and those around him who advise him are trying to find the right register. Now, it seems, the push is to make him look human, that means emphasizing the admittedly wonderful things he has done in the church to help people," said Laurie Maffly-Kipp, a religion scholar at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, who writes frequently about the LDS church. "The trick is to do that without bringing up the parts of Mormonism that might sound odd to others."

A Gallup poll in June found that voter bias against Mormons has barely budged for decades. In the survey, 18 percent of Americans said they would not vote for a well-qualified presidential candidate who happens to be a Mormon, compared to 17 percent who said so in 1967, when Romney's father George had been seeking the Republican nomination.

However, the campaign clearly felt more confident discussing the LDS Church since Romney sealed the nomination.

Polls indicate that Republican voters are willing to set aside their concerns about the LDS church to oust President Barack Obama. A recent poll by the Pew Research Center found that a majority of people who know that Romney is Mormon are comfortable with his religion or don't consider it a concern. In the days leading up to the convention, Romney told interviewers he prays daily and discussed the doubts he experienced about his religion when he, like most young Mormon men, fulfilled his church duty to serve as a missionary. Romney served in overwhelmingly Catholic France during the 1960s, and faced hostility as an American and a Mormon.

"I don't think underlying attitudes have changed," said John Green, director of the University of Akron's Bliss Institute for Applied Politics. "I don't think evangelicals are any less skeptical about Mormons, but an election is a choice and Republicans have something to work with here because of the unpopularity of Obama among this group of evangelicals."

California heatwaves to move toward coastal areas: Researchers reassess heatwaves against the backdrop of rising temperatures

ScienceDaily (Aug. 29, 2012) ? A new study by researchers at Scripps Institution of Oceanography, UC San Diego, suggests that the nature of California heatwaves is changing due to global warming.

Climate researchers Alexander Gershunov and Kristen Guirguis detected a trend toward more humid heatwaves that are expressed very strongly in elevated nighttime temperatures, a trend consistent with climate change projections. Moreover, relative to local warming, the mid-summer heatwaves are getting stronger in generally cooler coastal areas. This carries implications for the millions of Californians living near the ocean whose everyday lives are acclimated to moderate temperatures.

"Heatwaves are stressful rare extremes defined relative to average temperatures," said Gershunov. "We've known for a while that humid heatwaves that are particularly hot at night are on the rise in California as the climate warms. Here, we sharpen the geographic focus to consider sub-regions of the state."

Gershunov added that in this new sharper and "non-stationary" perspective, coastal heatwaves express much more intensely than those inland where the summertime mean warming is stronger. This translates to a variety of impacts on the typically cool, un-acclimated coast.

Classic California heatwaves have been characterized as interior desert and valley events that are hot during the day and marked by dryness and strong nighttime cooling. Gershunov and Guirguis said their analysis of observations and computer model data indicates that the emerging flavor of heatwaves marked by greater humidity, greater expression in nighttime temperatures, and greater expression in coastal areas relative to the generally cooler coast are intensifying and will keep intensifying in coming decades. Both coastal and desert heatwaves will continue to be more common as climate changes relative to the past, but the desert heatwaves are becoming less intense relative to strong average warming observed and projected for the interior of the state.

The study, "California heat waves in the present and future," will appear in the American Geophysical Union journal Geophysical Research Letters.

The "non-stationary" approach reflects an acknowledgment by scientists that what has been considered extreme heat is gradually becoming commonplace. The rate of climate warming necessitates a measure of extreme heat relative to the changing average climate rather than to historical climate norms. So, instead of defining heatwaves relative to fixed temperature thresholds, the researchers projected heatwave intensity against a backdrop of increasing average summertime temperature. This causes the definition of heatwaves -- temperatures in the warmest 5 percent of summertime conditions -- to evolve with the changing climate and reflect extreme conditions relevant to the climate of the time.

"The advantage of using this evolving 'non-stationary' definition is that heatwaves remain extreme events even under much warmer climate," said Gershunov. "If they change in this evolving framework, it's because the variance of temperature is changing, not just the average."

The authors point out that the trend could precipitate a variety of changes in California's coastal communities, where stronger heat will lead to the installation of air conditioners in homes traditionally not in need of cooling. This lifestyle trend would in turn affect energy demand in coastal areas, its magnitude and timing. In the absence of technological or physiological acclimatization, high humidity and the lingering of heat through the night is expected to have strong public health implications, placing added stress on many of the more than 21 million Californians who live in coastal counties. The same would be true for animals and plants living in the highly populated and diverse coastal zone.

"This trend has important human health implications for coastal California where most of the state's population lives," said Guirguis. "Coastal communities are acclimated to cooler mean temperatures and are not well prepared for extreme heat either physiologically or technologically through air conditioning use. Populations tend to adapt to changes in their average conditions but extreme events can catch people off guard. An increase in heat wave intensity relative to average conditions could mean much more heat-related illness during heat waves unless effective heat emergency plans are implemented."

Polish economic growth slows to 2.4 percent in Q2

(AP) ? New data show the Polish economy grew 2.4 percent year-on-year in the second quarter, a sharper slowdown than experts had expected.

The economy grew 4.3 percent in 2011 before slowing to 3.5 percent year-on-year in the first quarter of this year. Several economists and the central bank head had predicted that second quarter growth would come in higher, at around 2.9 percent.

Poland, the largest of the ex-communist countries to join the European Union in past years, has enjoyed fast growth since entering the bloc in 2004 thanks to an inflow of EU subsidies and foreign investments. It was the only EU country to avoid recession during the crisis of 2008-09.

Poland is expected to keep growing through 2013, though at a much more modest level.

At Tampa convention, cheerleaders and tequila are serious business

TAMPA, Florida (Reuters) - Voters watching the Republican National Convention may see Mitt Romney, Paul Ryan and other party standard bearers on their television sets, but they don't get to sip tequila with NFL cheerleaders.

They don't get to swat line drives at Tropicana Field, home to baseball's Tampa Bay Rays. They won't get in to the yacht parties, beach parties and cigar parties that await delegates outside the convention hall.

In short, TV viewers are missing out on the real business of Tampa. At a swirl of breakfast briefings, luncheons and late-night blowouts, Republican politicians and delegates can forge tighter ties with the business interests and wealthy donors who underwrite the party.

Donors face few limits on the amount of money they can give to the convention. Interest groups and trade associations also are paying for many of the 200 events scheduled in the Tampa area this week.

Though little actual arm-twisting takes place at such events, they represent a valuable opportunity for lobbyists to build relationships with lawmakers and campaign officials who might hold positions of power if Romney wins the November 6 election against Democratic President Barack Obama.

"There are only so many venues to have events, and getting out the word that you have a good event is a way to engender goodwill," said Bill Allison, editorial director of the Sunlight Foundation, a nonprofit group pushing for greater transparency in government.

Just off the convention floor, Republican members of the House of Representatives can unwind in a private lounge underwritten by companies such as Diageo, Comcast and Microsoft.

At a nearby salon, delegates can freshen their makeup, buff their nails and sip cocktails, thanks to the Personal Care Products Council.

Many events come with a steep admission fee.

Want to hit a beach party with members of Oklahoma's congressional delegation? Tickets cost $1,000 each. Want to hang out with the Tennessee delegation at the Glazer Children's Museum? Those tickets cost $5,000 to $25,000.

A $1,000 check also bought admission to a Wednesday charity event at Tropicana Field, where lobbyists for tech companies and drug firms chased dreams of big-league baseball glory as they smacked fly balls into the outfield.

On the sidelines, Kentucky Representative Ed Whitfield, chairman of the House Energy and Power subcommittee, chatted with a top lobbyist for Toyota.

MERMAIDS, SHARKS, FOG

Other events only require connections -- or persistence.

A long line snaked out the door of the Florida Aquarium on Monday night, where women dressed as mermaids swam in a shark tank and midriff-baring cheerleaders for the National Football League's Tampa Bay Buccaneers posed for pictures with congressional staffers.

Partygoers walked through a curtain of mist that displayed the logos of sponsors like the Distilled Spirits Council of the United States and the National Association of Realtors.

The big money is keeping a lower profile.

"Super PACs," the new political action committees that have injected hundreds of millions of dollars into the presidential campaign, are not advertising the events at which they connect multimillion-dollar donors with party bigwigs.

American Crossroads, a Super PAC that aims to spend $200 million to defeat Obama, plans a Thursday briefing for donors who will hear from two Florida Republicans frequently mentioned as future presidential candidates: Senator Marco Rubio and former Governor Jeb Bush, a spokesman said.

A PARTY GOES AWRY

A similar event on Wednesday proved embarrassing for the Romney campaign.

According to ABC News, Romney officials met with top donors aboard a 150-foot (45-meter) yacht that was flying the flag of the Cayman Islands - the offshore tax haven that has served as a home for some of Romney's $200 million-plus fortune.

"Some advance staffer is going to lose his job over that," said a Romney supporter who did not want to be identified.

Party organizers must ensure that they do not run afoul of congressional ethics rules put in place after a series of lobbying scandals in 2007.

Because lawmakers and staffers can't accept a full meal, events tend to feature finger food like oysters, sushi and fruit skewers.

Invitations no longer promise the presence of specific lawmakers but merely note that members of a certain committee or state delegation have been invited.

One party organizer said he sensed a greater willingness to splurge than at the Republican's 2008 convention in St. Paul, Minnesota, when the party's presidential nominee was Arizona Senator John McCain, a fierce advocate of campaign-finance limits.

"The corporate money was a little bit skittish because it didn't know if it was welcome," said Republican consultant Scott Cottington. "I think it's an easier sell in Tampa than it was in St. Paul."

The Democratic Party has tried to limit the influence of outside money at its convention in Charlotte, North Carolina, next week. The attempt hasn't impressed good-government advocates, who say it is riddled with loopholes that ensure big donors will still be able to buy access.

Republicans, meanwhile, have set no limits for their event, which is expected to cost $55 million.

The head of the Tampa convention's organizing committee says there is nothing improper with accepting multimillion-dollar contributions from businesses because the money goes to promote the city, rather than the election of Romney.

"We have nothing to do with politics," said Ken Jones, president of the Tampa Bay Host Committee.

The Latest Technology In Computer Hardware - Josephjosue 21s ...

The rate at which new computer hardware products are arriving in the market is simply mind-boggling. As the technology advances, the size and also the price of the devices come down, as the efficiency and capacity increase. The scenario is same in every case, whether it?s about internal components like processor, motherboard, RAM, graphics card, and hard disk or for peripheral accessories like mouse, keyboard, and monitors. Personal computers became popular only before around three decades back. But already there are huge piles of outdated and antique hardware components and devices. This is a tribute to the tremendous rate of growth and development of latest technologies in computer hardware field. Perhaps, the newest entrant in to the archeological catalogue laptop or computer peripherals is CRT monitors. The sleek looking LCD monitors are spreading like trojan.

Data storage devices have attracted considerable attention of the technology developers. New kinds of storage devices such as newer versions of flash memory cards, hard drives using latest technology and disks of ever-increasing capacity would be the results of advancement in latest technology in compute hardware. The memory size of the random access memory (RAM) cards is soaring make it possible for the smooth functioning of graphics animation software programs and streaming video websites. Also, computer motherboards have undergone substantial changes over the years. Increasingly more functions are being added to the motherboard. Also, despite the incredible improvement in performance and functionalities, the buying price of these components has actually fallen steadily.

The most vital component of a computer is the microprocessor. It is in this field that the battle of developing latest technologies in computer hardware takes place. The pace of growth and development of microprocessor increases as the competition between the major model manufacturing companies, Intel and AMD, intensifies. Both the companies are engaging in a neck and neck competition and continuously outdo each other in introducing technology.

In the field of computer peripherals, the latest technology in computer hardware is in developing another version of wireless mouse and keyboard. The concept of wireless mouse and keyboard is about ten years old. But the development of these items is still a piece happening. The most recent products of wireless mouse and keyboard are said to become highly durable and error free.

Some of the developments within the latest technology in computer hardware are preparing for changing the present concept of desktop and laptops. With new developments making possible the convergence of mobile phone technology and computers, a brand new breed of fully functional palm-top computers are going to be introduced in near future. With touch screen monitors and without resorting to a mouse, these gadgets are likely to become the next big leap in the constantly leaping technological development field.

365 Business Network Meet Up #6 ? ? City Cabs City Cabs

365 Business Network is an eclectic group of individuals, business people, entrepreneurs, and the like. We will be meeting for the sixth time this Tuesday August 28, at Bobby O?Brien?s. Bring a friend.

When we sat down initially to discuss forming a group where people living and working in Kitchener Waterloo could discuss and find answers to questions in an online community and then have the opportunity to meet once a month as a group, we thought seriously about calling our group 365 Social Network. We are after all, networking socially online daily and in person monthly.

But we wanted to maintain a certain level of seriousness of purpose, the purpose being to build relationships with other group members, establish trust and confidence in a whole new group of friends so that when the opportunity arises to do business together (or to refer business) we know who to turn to for advice and service.

365 Business Network is an offshoot of?365 things to do in Kitchener Waterloo. 365 things to do in Kitchener Waterloo is a community website that I and my partners started about a year and a half ago. The purpose of the site is to highlight one event, attraction, restaurant, place of interest, or thing to do every day in Waterloo Region.

Truth be told, as a real estate agent, my goal of starting the site, besides community involvement, was as an online marketing vehicle for my real estate business. Not only does every daily post have an advertisement for me and my real estate business, it also gets me and my real estate business partner ? Alasdair Douglas and my 365 things to do partners ? Mike Stark and Amanda Maxwell out in the community, interacting with retailers, restauranteurs, gallery owners and the myriad of other private and public individuals we end up meeting. 365 things to do in Kitchener Waterloo is certainly a popular social interactive site. We get over 10,000 unique visits a month and about 60,000 page views. As we used to say when I was teaching English in Taiwan, ?That?s not too shabby?. Our goal is for 365 Business Network to be a socially interactive community for Kitchener Waterloo businesses, business people and residents.

365 Business Network meets on the last Tuesday of every month. Bobby O?Brien?s is providing free appetizers. There is free parking after 6pm in the public lot across the street. This group and event are free to join.

365 Business Network meet up is not a ?sales networking? event. People doing business in Kitchener Waterloo are encouraged to bring your business cards, brochures and samples ? we sometimes have a couple of tables set up where you can carve out a little piece of real estate for your business promotional material. Attendees are encouraged to gather the material they want.

Where: Bobby O?Brien, 125 King St. West, Kitchener.

When: August 28, 2012

Time: 6:30 ? 8:30pm

Free parking: after 6:00pm in the lot across the street

Michigan athletes compete in 2012 Paralympic Games ...

Paralyzed Veterans of America, Disabled American Veterans, and Military Order of the Purple Heart are three congressionally chartered veterans service organizations that support sports and recreation programs for military veterans for rehabilitation and fitness.

Some of the athletes that benefit from their programs are going to the London 2012 Paralympic Games that begin Wednesday and end Sept. 9.

PVA?s programs include the PVA Sports 32nd National Veterans Wheelchair Games that co-hosted 540 disabled U.S. military veteran athletes in June in Richmond, Va., with the Department of Veterans Affairs. The multi-event sports rehabilitation program is open to vets who use wheelchairs for sports competition due to spinal cord injuries, amputations or certain neurological problems, and who receive care at VA medical facilities or military treatment centers.

Competition includes air guns, archery, basketball, bowling, field, hand-cycling, nine-ball, motorized wheelchair relay, power soccer, quad rugby, softball, swimming, table tennis, track and field, trapshooting, weightlifting and wheelchair slalom.

Founded in 1946, PVA advocates for the rights of veterans and non-veterans who have disabilities, and focuses on spinal cord injury and disease. There are about 19,000 members.

PVA has a PVA-AWBA Bowling Tournament Series, a PVA-NWPA Billiards Tournament Series, a PVA Bass Tour, the PVA National Trapshoot and air rifle-air pistol competitions in locations all over the country. As part of the PVA Fitness and Wellness Program, the Paralyzed Veterans Racing Team has upcoming competitions in the Tour de La France in South Carolina; in the Pensacola Cycling Classic and in the Rims on the Run in Florida; and in the Army Ten Miler in Washington, D.C. Contact PVA Sports and Recreation at 1-800-424-8200, ext. 752 or 657, or Tom Brown at 817-225-2415.

Scot Severn, 44, of Caro, is the sports director for Michigan Paralyzed Veterans of America, based in Novi.

He is one of 20 U.S. military vets among the 227 disabled athletes named by the United States Olympic Committee to be part of the U.S. Paralympic Team competing in London. The team, that includes six guides for visually impaired athletes, comprises 133 men and 94 women.

Severn became partially paralyzed in 1989 when he was struck by lightning while on duty with the U.S. Army Reserves at Camp Grayling. He graduated from Saginaw Valley State, married in 1994, and is the father of three children. He plays rugby for the Michigan Storm team.

He competed in shot put and discus at the 2008 Beijing Paralympic games where he was seventh in discus and ninth in shot put. He set a personal record then, and threw a national record, and has since set a new personal record. He goes into his second Paralympic Games as the U.S. No. 1-ranked shot put, discus and javelin thrower. He also is first nationally in discus and javelin. In world ranking, he is No. 2 in shot put and in the top five in discus and javelin. Continued...

Severn hopes to be ready for the 2016 Paralympics in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

He does three-hour workouts every other day, plus has throwing practice, and says that military training helps athletes with sports training.

Severn has traveled the world competing with premier athletes in field events and has received wheelchair rugby Most Valuable Player awards, earned silver medals in the discus and shot at the Parapan American Games in Guadalajara, Mexico, and holds numerous national records. He was the Michigan Athletes with Disabilities Hall of Fame?s Athlete of the Year for 2005.

In the track and field competition at the Paralympic Games, the United States is represented by 58 athletes making it the largest sport delegation for Team USA. Three of the athletes set world records at the 2012 U.S. Paralympic Trials ? Track and Field in Indianapolis.

There are 170 medal events ? 96 track, 70 field, and four road for 740 men and 360 women competitors at the Olympic Park ? Olympic Stadium (track and field) and The Mall (marathon.)

Severn?s teammates include a U.S. Navy vet from San Diego, and U.S. Army vets from Long Beach, Calif., Atlanta, Ga., and Pittsburgh, Pa. Athletics includes archery, cycling, fencing, rowing, shooting, sitting volleyball, soccer, swimming, wheelchair rugby, track and field, road running, cross-country running and race walking.

Paralympians are grouped into classes according to visual impairment and intellectual impairment such as traumatic brain injury, cerebral palsy, amputations or limb deficiencies, and for those using a wheelchair to compete.

Severn?s fellow veteran, U.S. Navy Lt. Bradley Snyder, who was blinded in Afghanistan, competes in swimming on the one-year anniversary of his injury.

The Paralympic Games has about 4,200 athletes in competition. Americans will take part in 19 contested areas. Additional sports are boccia, equestrian, goalball, judo, powerlifting, sailing, soccer seven-a-side, table tennis, wheelchair basketball, wheelchair fencing and wheelchair tennis.

At the Beijing 2008 Paralympic Games, Team USA claimed a total of 99 medals, finishing third overall. Nineteen Beijing medalists are going to London including 11 other Michigan natives. Continued...

The Paralympic Movement began in England. The ?para? in Paralympic means parallel (to the Olympics.)

VA Paralympic website

The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs launched a website for its Paralympic program a year ago as part of the VA?s ongoing commitment to support the rehabilitation and recovery of disabled veterans through participation in adaptive sports that encourages independence, reduced dependency on pain and depression medication, and reduces stress. The site contains information on training allowances, the VA Paralympic Grant Program, and resources for caregivers and VA clinical personnel. It is at va.gov/adaptivesports.

The program provides Olympic standard training, equipment, coaching and logistics for regional sports events for veterans hospitals and disabled veterans support services throughout the U.S. In addition to $8 million in annual funding to operate the program, $2 million a year is available for grants to individual disabled veterans to pay for additional athletic training needs.

More than $4.4 million in funds from the VA was awarded to 95 community-based organizations in support of Paralympic sport and physical activity programs for disabled vets and disabled members of the armed forces. Grants ranging from $2,500 to $500,000 were provided to USOC partner organizations and community programs to increase the opportunities for disabled veterans to participate in physical activity within their home communities and in more Paralympic programs at the regional and national levels.

Veterans training in eligible adaptive sports can apply for a monthly assistance allowance through the Paralympics Program if they meet the qualifying military standard for that particular sport. A veteran may be eligible whether his or her disability is service-related or non-service-related.

Rehabilitation and sports clinic for vets

The National Veterans Summer Sports Clinic promotes rehabilitation of body and spirit by teaching summer sporting activities to veterans with significant physical or psychological impairments. The clinic offers such sports as surfing, sailing, kayaking, track and field, and cycling to veterans who are newly injured from amputations, traumatic brain injuries, post-traumatic stress disorder and other neurological disorders.

The National Veterans Golden Age Games is a national multi-event sports competition and recreational program designed to improve the quality of life for older vets. The program for veterans age 55 and older offers 14 different sports and recreational activities.

The Military Order of the Purple Heart helps to sponsor the National Veterans Golden Age Games. The 26th annual event took place last spring in St. Louis where the commander of MOPH Missouri Chapter 125 presented checks totaling $34,000, including a $30,000 grant from the MOPH Service Foundation, for transportation, food, equipment and supplies for the events. Continued...

MOPH formed in 1932 for the protection and mutual interest of veterans and active duty men and women who have received the Purple Heart Medal for wounds received in combat.

Winter sports clinic and competition

The National Disabled Veterans Winter Sports Clinic instructs veterans with disabilities in adaptive Alpine and Nordic skiing and introduces them to other adaptive recreational activities and sports. Vets who have spinal cord injuries, amputations, traumatic brain injuries, neurological challenges and visual impairments may participate.

Disabled American Veterans and the VA co-sponsored the 26th annual clinic at Snowmass Village, Colo., in March for more than 400 participants who drew on the qualities they demonstrated in uniform to try winter and other sports. The group included nine active-duty service members and 94 veterans of operations in Iraq and Afghanistan. The event ? that also involves rock climbing, scuba diving, trapshooting, wheelchair fencing, sled hockey and snowmobiling ? is called ?Miracle on a Mountainside.?

Veterans Affairs Secretary Eric K. Shinseki is a disabled veteran who lost part of his right foot in Vietnam. He praised the strides the veterans at the clinic have made in their recuperation.

?You may have been injured, but life isn?t over. There is still a lot of living to do for all of us,? Shinseki said. ?It will be different, no doubt. And you are going to have to work hard to improve functionality. But that is the challenge and the triumph, every day ? to keep on living while you are living.?

Donald Samuels is immediate past DAV national commander.

?You have all faced down challenges in your service to our country, and I am urging you to rekindle your fighting spirit and do the same with the hurdles you may face here,? Samuels said. ?Make it part of your healing process.?

Seventh annual DAV golf outing

The Disabled American Veterans Department of Michigan holds its seventh annual Thomas A. McMasters III DAV golf outing on Sept. 8 at Fern Hill Country Club at 17600 Clinton River Road in Clinton Township. Register by Friday for the scramble format play, which is $320 per team for 18 holes. There is a 9 a.m. shotgun start, and hole sponsorships are available. Call 1-888-448-2328 for more information. There is a DAV office at 17779 E. 14 Mile Road in Fraser and a DAV thrift store in Westland.

Samsung unveils new Series 7 and Series 5 AIOs Windows 8 and gesture recognition for $749 and up

Samsung teased a Series 7 all-in-one running Windows 8 -- on a 10-point touch display -- at Computex in June, and today the machine gets official with pricing and specs. The Series 7 will be available in 23- and 27-inch flavors, both of which run Microsoft's latest OS on a 1080p touchscreen. The setup includes a redesigned keyboard, which is small enough to tuck under the display's metal stand, and the AIOs will support gesture recognition. The 23-inch Series 7 costs $1,099 and runs a Core i5 CPU with 6GB of RAM, 1TB of storage and Intel Graphics 4000. The 27-inch model offers a Core i7 processor, 8GB of RAM, 1TB of storage and discrete AMD Radeon HD 7850M graphics, all for $1,699.

In addition to refreshing its Series 7 machines, Samsung is introducing the 21.5-inch Series 5 all-in-one, which it describes as a "kitchen-style PC." Its legs are on either end of the display, leaving room to stow the keyboard under the screen and freeing up your desk (or counter) space. The Series 5 will go for $749, and it includes a Core i3 processor, 4GB of RAM and 500GB of storage. All three AIOs have two USB 3.0 ports, three USB 2.0 connections, HDMI and a media card reader, and all will go on sale October 26th. You know the drill -- head past the break for our hands-on photos.

NASA sees Hurricane Isaac affecting the Northern Gulf Coast

ScienceDaily (Aug. 28, 2012) ? NASA and NOAA satellites continue to provide detailed information on Hurricane Isaac as the storm bears down on the U.S. Gulf coast. NASA's TRMM and Terra satellites captured imagery, and NOAA's GOES-13 satellite provided animations of Isaac's march toward the coast today, Aug. 28.

Residents along the northern Gulf coast are bracing for the arrival of Isaac, which was recently upgraded to a hurricane by the National Hurricane Center as of 1:00 p.m. CDT. At that time, the center of Isaac was located about 55 miles (~85 km) south-southeast of the Mississippi and was moving northwest at 10 mph and was nearing southeastern coast of Louisiana.

After crossing the southwestern tip of Haiti during the early morning hours of the 25th of August, Isaac paralleled the northern coast of Cuba the following day and moved through the Florida Straits with the center passing about 40 miles (~65 km) south of Key West, Florida on the afternoon of the 26th. All the while, Isaac remained a tropical storm despite passing over warm water. As it entered the southeastern Gulf of Mexico on the afternoon of August 26th, Isaac seemed poised to intensify with plenty of over warm Gulf water ahead and relatively low wind shear. However, even as Isaac moved northwest through this favorable environment into the central Gulf of Mexico, it was slow to intensify, becoming a stronger tropical storm but not a hurricane until just before landfall. Several factors seemed to inhibit Isaac's intensification. Being a large storm, Isaac's wind field is spread over a large area, making it less responsive to changes in central pressure. Also, dry air intrusions hindered the development of an inner core. The lack of an inner core was the main reason Isaac failed to really intensify.

TRMM captured an image of Isaac on August 28 at 4:01 UTC (12:01 a.m. EDT) as it was approaching the northern Gulf coast. The image was TRMM shows a broad area of moderate (shown in green) to heavy rain (shown in red) wrapping around the southwestern side of the storm with only moderate to light rain (shown in blue) on the opposite side and no heavy rain near the center. The cloud shield (shown in white) is also well pronounced in the southwestern half of Isaac but inhibited along the northern edge. At the time of this image Isaac was a strong tropical storm with sustained winds of 60 knots (~70 mph). Because of its large size, Isaac stills poses a threat for storm surge and it's expected slower movement over Louisiana brings the risk of flooding.

An animation of NOAA's GOES-13 satellite imagery from Aug. 26-28, 2012 of Hurricane Isaac's track through the Gulf of Mexico was animated by NASA's GOES Project at the NASA Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Md. The animation shows Isaac is headed for New Orleans, exactly 7 years after hurricane Katrina.

The Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) instrument on NASA's Terra satellite captured a visible image of Hurricane Isaac as it approached Louisiana on Aug. 28 at 12:30 p.m. EDT. A large band of showers and thunderstorms stretched from the Carolinas, west over Georgia, Alabama, Mississippi, Florida and into Louisiana, wrapping into Isaac's center of circulation when it was centered about 100 miles south of the mouth of the Mississippi River.

On Aug. 28 at 2 p.m. EDT, Hurricane Isaac's maximum sustained winds were near 75 mph (120 kmh). Isaac is a category one hurricane on the Saffir-Simpson scale. It was centered about 55 miles (85 km) south-southeast of the mouth of the Mississippi River near latitude 28.4 north and longitude 88.7 west. Isaac is moving toward the northwest near 10 mph (17 kmh). The National Hurricane Center expects Hurricane Isaac should reach the coastline of southeastern Louisiana as early as this evening.

At 2 p.m. EDT, the National Hurricane Center noted that tropical-storm-force winds were occurring at the mouth of the Mississippi river. That's where a NOAA observing site located at Southwest Pass, Louisiana reported sustained winds of 60 mph (93 kmh) and a gust to 76 mph (122 kmh) at an elevation of 80 feet.
