Sight-Line Science: Candle in the Mirror

A Clear Science Illusion: A simple candle-lit trick can help demonstrate some complex optical principles while wowing onlookers in the process! Image: George Retseck

    • We?ve long understood black holes to be the points at which the universe as we know it comes to an end. Often billions of times more massive than the Sun, they...

    Optical illusions

    Introduction
Ever wonder why mirrors can make a room feel so much larger than it really is? Mirrors are so common that we rarely think of how intriguing they really are. They somehow take the three-dimensional world we live in and reproduce it so perfectly that we are subconsciously fooled into perceiving that another 3-D space exists beyond the mirror's surface. We know, of course, that this is just an illusion. But how do our brains get tricked by reflections? A simple activity with a candle will demonstrate some of the ways our brains get fooled.

    Background
Visible objects fall into two general categories: luminous objects (such as your computer monitor) that emit their own light and illuminated objects (your keyboard, for instance) that reflect light emitted by other sources. Your eyes see objects by detecting either emitted or reflected light, and under most circumstances that light has to reach your eyes by traveling in a straight line. In other words, you usually need an unobstructed line of sight between yourself and any object you intend to view.

Mirrors and other highly reflective surfaces present a common exception to this rule. Most mirrors are made by layering a reflective metal backing behind a sheet of clear glass. Because the backing is so reflective, it provides an "image" (an apparent reproduction of visible objects). This sort of image can be deceptive because its apparent location doesn't match up with the actual, physical location of the object creating that image. Consider an image of a chair that you see in a mirror versus the real chair that you can see in the actual room if you have a direct line of sight to it.

So-called plane mirrors are even more mind-bending because the images they create are known as virtual images. These images are created when rays of light emitted or reflected by an object seem to converge somewhere behind the mirror. And some surfaces can act as mirrors without the special reflective silver backing. Sound confusing? Don't worry?we'll get to see all of these concepts in action. In this activity we will use a transparent surface to see how it both transmits and reflects light. This will allow us to learn about light by interacting with the real, visible space behind the surface where virtual images appear.

    Materials
    ? Two tea candles
? Matches or a lighter to light the candles?along with adult assistance or supervision for doing so
? CD jewel case with one glossy, transparent surface
? Dark surface (you can create one by laying a black T-shirt flat on a table)
? Identical household items (paper clips, etcetera) in pairs (optional)

    Preparation
? Find a room that can be made dark by turning the lights off.
? With the lights still on, prepare your dark surface.
? Remove the album art from the CD case if it has any so that the hinged front cover is now a transparent panel.
? Use caution (and adult assistance/supervision) when lighting the candles and working with lit ones.

    Procedure
? ? Working on your dark surface with the lights still on, stand the CD case on its bottom edge. Open the CD case at a 90-degree angle.
? Take one unlit tea candle and place it on the side of the CD case's transparent panel nearest you. Make sure you can see its reflection. Where in space does the reflected image appear to be? Why do you think this is?
? Take the other unlit tea candle and place it on the other side of the transparent panel. Adjust the position of the second candle so that it's in the same apparent location as the reflection of your first tea candle.
? Move your head around while looking at the second tea candle through the CD case. Can you see the reflection of the first tea candle? Does the reflection ever not appear to be transposed over the actual location of the second tea candle?
? Now, take a look at the orientation of the CD case and the tea candles from above. Note the position of the two tea candles. What's special about their positions relative to the CD case's transparent panel?
? Nudge the first tea candle away from the CD case slightly. What happens to the reflection?
? Nudge the second tea candle to match the apparent location of the first tea candle's reflection.
? Turn off the lights and light the tea candle located on the side of the transparent panel nearest you. Look at the reflected image. What do you see?
? Extra: If you want to turn this into a great illusion for another observer, do it again, just make sure they don't see how you set it up beforehand! Your observer should observe the illusion from the side of the transparent pane with the lit candle. Touch the wick of the unlit candle on the opposite side of the panel with your hand. Your observer may be surprised that you don't burn yourself!
? Extra: Without looking at the reflections directly, try to make a diorama with household objects such as paper clips on both sides of the CD case so that the reflections match perfectly. It may be easier if you make it without the lit candles. Hint: The tea candles demonstrated how far away from a mirror two objects need to be to match each other's reflections.

Bernanke: Timetable for bond purchases not preset

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Chairman Ben Bernanke says the Federal Reserve's timetable for reducing its bond purchases is not on a "preset course" and the Fed could increase or decrease them based on how the economy performs.

Bernanke tells lawmakers in testimony that the job market has made some progress since the Fed began buying $85 billion a month in bonds in September. And he repeated his belief that the Fed could slow that pace later this year if the economy strengthens.

But Bernanke cautioned that the Fed wants to see substantial progress in the job market before scaling back the bond purchases. If conditions worsen, the Fed could maintain its current pace or even increase it.

The bond purchases are intended to keep long-term interest rates low and encourage more borrowing and spending.

Past colon cancer tied to future cancer risks

    By Genevra Pittman

NEW YORK (Reuters Health) - People who have had colon cancer are 15 percent more likely to be diagnosed with another cancer than those with no history of the disease, a new study suggests.

Using data from cancer registries from nine states, researchers found small intestine, lung, kidney, stomach, bladder and endometrial cancers were all more common among people with a history of colon cancer.

"The most common cancer among these individuals is another colorectal cancer, but there are potentially other cancer sites that we need to be aware of," said Amanda Phipps at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center in Seattle, who led the study.

According to the American Cancer Society, about one in 20 people will be diagnosed with colon or rectal cancer during their lifetime.

The new study included about 170,000 people diagnosed with those cancers between 1992 and 2009. During that span, 15,000 of them - or about nine percent - were found to have a second cancer.

Compared to the average American, people in the study with a history of colon cancer were twice as likely to develop a second colon cancer.

They also had four times as many cancers of the small intestine as would be expected in a typical population and were 42 percent more likely to be diagnosed with kidney cancer and 14 percent more likely to get lung cancer.

Those risks varied by where in the colon or rectum a person's first tumor had been found, according to findings published in the journal Cancer.

"We have this growing knowledge that colorectal cancer isn't just one disease," Phipps told Reuters Health.

"We saw the greatest increased risk among individuals whose first cancer was located in sort of the central portions of the colon."

Although it's not clear why that was the case, she said the finding could help researchers in the future target patients who are most likely to get a second cancer.

"The general message is very consistent now over several papers, that colorectal cancer patients have good outcomes, however even when cured they have an excess risk" of future cancers, said Dr. Jason Zell, who has also studied the topic at the University of California, Irvine.

He said there are a few possible explanations for the findings. First, treatment of colon cancer - whether with surgery, radiation or chemotherapy - could raise or lower the risk of cancer in nearby organs.

Another possibility is that more cancers are caught among people with a history of disease simply because they undergo more tests than the average patient.

Or, he told Reuters Health, "Maybe we've been underestimating the effects of common risk factors, like genetics? and also just diet and lifestyle."

Zell, who wasn't involved in the new research, said current studies are looking into whether second cancers can be prevented through exercise or healthier eating.

He said the findings shouldn't change treatment of colon cancer survivors, including how closely they are watched for other diseases. That's in part because there are no good screening tools for some of the cancers tied to colorectal cancer.

"For right now, I don't think it affects any screening recommendations directly," he said.

Wade joins chorus of upset NBA, NFL athletes on Twitter

Heat star Dwyane Wade was among the high-profile athletes who reacted angrily to Saturday?s acquittal of George Zimmerman, a neighborhood watch volunteer who fatally shot Trayvon Martin, an unarmed black teenager, in Sanford.

Dwyane Wade was the only Heat player who tweeted about the case shortly afterward, saying: ?Wow! Stunned!! Saddened as a father!! Som1 make sense of this verdict for me right now please!!! ? How do I explain this to my boys??

Numerous other NBA players weighed in, including Oklahoma City Thunder center Kendrick Perkins, who tweeted: ?America justice system is a joke.? Golden State guard Stephen Curry said: ?Wait, [Zimmerman] gets his gun back, too??

Among the tweets from Dolphins players: Receiver Mike Wallace: ?Wowwwwwww. (Expletive) crazy.?? Tight end Charles Clay: ?Dats some bull [expletive].?

Defensive end Derrick Shelby: ?There might be riots.? Receiver Armon Binns: ?The justice system failed today. My prayers go out to Trayvon?s family.?

At least two players from other NFL teams apologized on Sunday for their comments on the matter.

Atlanta Falcons receiver Roddy White tweeted on Saturday: ?[Expletive] Zimmerman got away with murder today. Wow what kind of world do we live in. ? All them jurors should go home and kill themselves for letting a grown man get away with killing a kid.?

On Sunday, White tweeted: ?I understand my tweet last [night] was extreme. I never meant for the people to do that. I was shocked and upset about the verdict. I am sorry.?

After the verdict, New York Giants receiver Victor Cruz predicted ?Zimmerman doesn?t last a year before the hood catches up with him.?

On Sunday, Cruz tweeted: ?I apologize. That?s why I deleted it. I believe conversation, not confrontation, leads to change and progress.?

Meanwhile, Cincinnati Bengals linebacker James Harrison tweeted: ?Then I?ll go pick a fight and get my [butt] kicked, then pull my gun and kill somebody and see if I can get away.?

Buffalo Bills receiver Stevie Johnson tweeted: ?Damn, Plaxico Burress shot HIMSELF and got 2 yrs! This dude shot and killed another. ? Living in a world where you fight dogs, you could lose everything [Mike Vick]. If you kill a black man, you?re not guilty. #Injustice system.?

Meanwhile, UM running back Duke Johnson tweeted: ?Heavy heart right now for the Martin family, and I just want everyone to say a prayer for the Martin family.?

UM safety Deon Bush tweeted: ?Straight b.s.! Reverse the sides and Trayvon would of had a life sentence. Maybe death sentence.? Bush deleted the second half of that tweet later Sunday.
