In a nutshell: have a plan.
This year I complied lists and lists of ideas I had collected, including only what I thought would work for us. I printed it out, placed it in a page protector, and added it to my three ring binder with my other checklists.
Before the big kids and I sit down at the table for Together Time (Latin & Greek Roots, Logic of English, and Lingua Angelica) I get something ready for the little ones to do. Otherwise they wreak havoc or migrate upstairs and become suspiciously quiet.

They key for us at this stage is that the activity needs to be something they can do by themselves. When the big kids are working independently I have time to get out other activities that need supervision ; )
