Rugby World Cup 2011 [Review] - Game Reviews, News & Trailers ...

Rugby World Cup 2011 - ps3I've always thought that rugby translated pretty well to being simulated in video game form.

This is in no small part down to EA's Rugby 2008 by developers HB Studios - a free flowing version of the game that simplified rucks and mauls, yet managed to strike a decent mix of rough and tumble action.

Somewhat surprisingly, that's been the only significant approximation of the sport for nearly four years, with rugby not represented on this generation of consoles at all.

Thankfully, this licensed tie-in for next month's World Cup rectifies that situation, with
HB Studios returning to the thick of the scrum action.

Anyone who played Rugby 08 will feel at home here. While the graphics have been given a HD reworking, particularly with stadiums - Twickenham is absolutely spot on - some of the old player animations for running and kicking appear to have been carried over.

The game plays surprisingly similarly as well, with some more depth to the controls and strategies for rucks being the only obvious big leaps on the gameplay front.

This is no bad thing as the original played so well - and most fans of the sport will just be happy with the welcome ability to play a rugby game one vs one online for the
first time.

Like buses, you wait for one rugby game and two come at once with the promising looking Jonah Lomu's Rugby Challenge due next month.

But for the meantime at least, this does a great job of filling a gaping gap for sports gaming fans.
