CPS finalizes solar deal that promises 800 local jobs

CPS Energy, San Antonio?s municipal utility, today finalized a deal with OCI Solar Power LLC to construct a 400-megawatt solar facility here that will create 800 jobs, including positions at a solar-panel manufacturing plant.

The project, announced earlier this year, is the largest in the nation among municipal utilities and catapults Texas into the top five U.S. solar producing states, according to CPS officials. It will provide electricity for nearly 70,000 households, or 10 percent of the utility?s customers.

?This agreement places San Antonio at the forefront of solar energy in the United States,? says Doyle Beneby, CPS?s chief executive officer.

Under CPS?s 25-year agreement with OCI, the South Korean solar company will establish its U.S. headquarters in San Antonio and generate $1 billion in construction investment. Supplier Nexelon America LLC also will establish a $100 million manufacturing operation to build solar panels here.

OCI, Nexelon and suppliers involved in the solar project are expected to create 800 jobs in San Antonio with an annual payroll of $40 million.

San Antonio-based OCI Solar Power, formerly Cornerstone Power Development, develops solar power plants throughout the United States and Canada. The company currently has more than 40 utility solar facility projects in development in the United States and Canada.

Seoul, Korea-based OCI Enterprises bought out the local company in January 2011 and renamed it OCI Solar Power.
